  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Newbie here. Just bought 2011 Genesis with Navigation Package with 30K miles. CPO but I also ending up purchasing top of the line warranty giving 100,000 bumper to bumper warranty.. for $1250.

I have turned a lot of the features off as I don't feel the need for them to be used everyday (parking assist, auto windshield wiper sensors, steering and seat assist, headlight tracking etc.).

I will be running the premium fuel though there seems to be some debate...I figure for my state of mind it is best to do this.

Taking the car in for two issues already:

1. Strut/Spring noise on front left. 3 different parts ordered:
a. 54635-3M000 Insulator assy -ST
b. 54628-3M000 Cover-FR Suspensi
c. 54633-3M000 Pad - FR Spring LWR

2. Right-side mirror tilts down in reverse but will not return to my "driving" position. It stays angled down looking at the concrete.

Anyone else with these issues?
Also, does anyone know what oil brand and weight the dealerships use?
Is it hard for me to change my own oil if I use ramps?

You have the Technology Package, not the Navigation Package. The Premium Package on the V6 also has Nav (although it is a different Nav than on Tech Package). I believe that the Technology Package was standard on the V8 for 2011 (was optional in 2009).

Dealers use whatever brand of oil they want. Some use 5W-30 and some use 5W-20. Most use conventional oil by default (unless you pay extra for synthetic), although I know of one dealer that uses a synthetic blend (part conventional and part synthetic) by default. I prefer a full synthetic.

There are several threads on changing your own oil. Shouldn't be too hard for a 2009-2011 model (a little harder starting in 2012). I would use the OEM filter cartridges, which you can buy online at a decent price from http://www.newhyundaiparts.com or at your dealer.

Using ramps for an oil change may not drain all the oil out. The 4.6 V8 has a two part oil pan and if on ramps and not level some oil may flow to the rear of the upper part of the two part oil pan. Try to have the car as level as possible. USE OEM filters. Check the threads on crushed oil filters.

Just read in the Owner's Manual that Hyundai recommends using Quaker State. Interesting. However, when I ask the dealership what they use I get different answers. The previous Owner changed the oil on average at 7,500 mi intervals so I am assuming synthetic was used.

The Quaker State recommendation is a paid advertisement, nothing else. Quaker State is owned by Shell Oil Products US (SOPUS) which also owns Pennzoil.

The oil change interval required by the warranty is 7500 miles. I would not assume that the previous owner used a synthetic because of that, although that is certainly a good idea going forward.

I am experiencing the mirror issue also. The service foreman and I think we have narrowed it down to a faulty main mirror switch as I have noted that whichever mirror the main switch is set to is the one that fails to return. (at least on my car) Is your main switch set to the passenger side or driver's side?

I use Valvoline Synpower 5w30. I have used it for years in several cars, putting over 200,000 miles on each. I have 116,000+ miles on my Genesis 4.6 V8. Never any oil used by any of those cars. Mobil 1, Pennziol Plat. or Ultra, Castrol Syn. are all very good.

^ Interesting, thanks. Now that I think about it, the main switch favors the passenger side and that is in fact the side that will not return...in other words, stayed pointing down. Tomorrow morning, I will move it to the neutral position and see if this helps. Thanks

If the service foreman thinks it's a faulty main mirror switch, why didn't he replace it?

If you leave the switch in the neutral position, you will not have fold down use. The main switch must be either in the left or right position for this feature to work. Try setting the switch to the L/H position and see if your driver's mirror fails to return. If so it may be the main switch.

He has a 4.6L V8. Only option is the Tech package. Use any really good synthetic oil IMO, but, stay away from two brands.... Amsoil and Castrol SynTec. Depending on climate in your area, either 5-20 or 5-30.

Thanks for the tips about the oils. No clue if the previous owner used synthetic but I plan on using full synthetic. You think it is early enough on the engine life that if he did not use synthetic that I would be ok switching and staying to full synthetic? I negotiated free oil changes with my dealer until I reach 100K miles, but I haven't been able to find out if the deal was for conventional or synthetic.

I resolved the mirror issues today by setting the switch on the drivers side setting...both mirrors go down when I put it in reverse and this is the way I want it. Good. When the switch was in neutral position, none of the mirrors went down. Thanks again for the input

Its ok to switch to synthetic. If you are not keeping the car past 100k then you may not get much advantage from synthetic oil.

Since you did not negotiate for synthetic, it was for conventional oil. It might be cheaper to bring your own synthetic oil for the upgrade, or call the service department and find out the difference in price.

I keep all cars/trucks until 200K miles. I avg 35K mi a year being in sales...50/50 city/highway...which means unfortunately I only keep cars about 5-6 years. My city driving is pretty easy though compared to traffic during gridlock peak times.

I have always used conventional 5W-30 so maybe I'm okay with sticking with this route too for this vehicle? After 100K, I will do the oil changes vs the dealer :D

No to brag, but I get 100K miles on brake pads minimum before they are needing replacement. Take care of my stuff!

Me too regarding miles. However I do use synthetic oil. I have 116,000 on my 2011 4.6 V8 Genesis, still have original brakes with 40% of the pad left as of 110,000 miles. You may want to consider having the transmission service done at 75k and every 60k afterwards since you will keep the car to 200k+ miles.

Had my first oil change today at dealer. Remember, I negotiated free oil changes until 100K mi. Turns out the dealer uses 5W-30 synthetic blend. I am cool with this!

They washed and vacuumed the car. Took about 20 min and came away feeling good about the dealership.

The parts finally came in on the new strut assembly I posted earlier in this thread...all fixed! :D

After I left the gym this evening I was listening to xm and the display screen flashed and went completely black in total silence only to immediately reboot. I didn't like the flash...it kind of scared me:eek: Anyone have this happen

I've got just over 38000 on my 2012 and my screen has rebooted itself probably 4 or 5 times. It doesn't seem to be anything to worry about. I've read where several others have experienced the same issue from time to time.
