  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Good Evening guys,

I'm new to the Hyundai world. I have been a Jeep loyalist for more than 10 years (yes I know much different world between the two cars).

I'm a college student and am about to sell my Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. I have fallen in love with the Genesis 5.0L R-Spec.

I recently found a few and was wondering if you guys could give me an opinion and if it's too good to be true.

Here are the two links:

A number of the 2012 5.0 engines had oil burn issues due to the use of "low friction" rings. Check the forum for the dates of manufacture and factor the potential problem into your price calculation.

I would not be afraid of oil consumption. Understand the situation on the car you are buying.. It may have had a new motor installed if it fell in the dates. Hyundai, unlike Euro-trash, by and large, has honored a commitment to provide a car that does not use excessive oil. They got stung with the defective German sourced rings for a shirt time. The car should have a 100k power train warranty.

Euro trash cars that have a problem, you will see owners putting in a quart at gas stations when they are traveling on highway.. This week saw two vacationers putting oil in their newer Euro clunks. First was a number named German car putting in a quart of the uber expensive Euro oil. Latter this week, a "peoples car" model putting in Quart of Castroil synthetic.. Both had out of states plates where they were filling up, and looked like holiday/vacation travels... Have heard neither of those brands will do much about it..

I bet others who have this combination and model year, will speak positive about this... IF you are so inclined, check out Hyundai dealer and loom for CPO model. If you shop them and tell them prices you are finding, you might get. Certified pre owned model for same price as non (or very close). They will have better extended warranty, and inspection.. They might throw in for uber cheap factory extended platinum warranty.. You might be surprised how competitive they will be.

The 4.6 and 6 speed combo is well liked. If you not not looking to have the halo motor that has some more power, the 4.6 is reported as fast and bomb proof. 2011 and prior have a stiffer ride.. Not better handling as result, just the way they are tuned. One of my team members has this year.. It rides rougher than my 2012 or 2015, yet is less dialed in on the corners. Not being critical, as 2011 still is a fine handling machine. Feels and sounds like carved out of a ingot of steel.

I would make sure you purchase an extended warranty on the first one. The 2nd isnt an rspec. Just a reg 5.0.. Same motor different suspension/wheels and badges.

I love my rspec. I purchased it for 22900 with 56000miles on the clock. Ive has it for 7 months now, zero problems zero oil consumption. Ive been very happy with my purchase. I wish you luck man..

Sweet! Y'all are much more friendly and helpful than previous forums that I have been apart of.

I'm leaning toward the 2011 due to price, dealer reputation. I would just purchase an extended warranty for it.

The first one turns out the dealer just told me it had floodboard only water so the title is rebuilt, explains why it is so cheap. And that 2nd one is inaccurately advertised which I HATE that dealers do that.

Sounds like fate is heading you towards the 2011. Good luck and hope it works out. Good strategy so far..

I'm selling my Wrangler in 2 hours. I sell my Grand Cherokee Tuesday, so Wednesday I plan on heading down and purchasing the 2011 4.6 as bad as I want the 5.0. As a college student the 4.6 will do just fine

Just curious how risky would it be to buy the 2012 5.0 R-Spec that had flooding to the floorboard?

Nope... Think of future resale.... Would be a bigger hit than what you think today is major hit you think might be a good deal.. As much as a 5.0 is cool, any flooding would be a major problem. Plus, factory warrant will be no good. The transmission and differential, let alone all the ABS and whatever else could be a mess.

The 5.0 non R Spec is the same as the R for 2012... With the exceptions of the 18" wheels and all season W rated tires. The springs, struts, sway bars, all the same. The sedan R version compared to the non R 5.0 is not like the coupe that is a bigger difference between two version of the V6.

You would love the 4.6, and the price is in the range you want to spend.. The R Speck will drive and handle better than the 2011, or 2012 4.6 (or V6 for that matter). Speaking of the V6... I would take any 2012 or later V6 over the flooded car. The GDI V6 running premium is amazing fast.. A sleeper. Lighter on the front end, a good overall compromise. Use Premium in it, will also keep it running at top HP ratings. You can find one with all the features of the R. I rented one for several months.. A base model. Got me sold on the platform. You want to pass 5 cars at once on a two lane road, no problem. V6 also runs like a scalded cat when doing that.

Just some thoughts for you to mull over.

So 2011 4.6 V8? Or 2012 or newer V6?

Also should I use premium gas in whatever engine I get?

Yes, or yes on choice if 5.0 price points are too high.

I suggest you do use premium. Especially with the GDI V6. Even in sedan tune, the uber hi compression, Hyundai gets it full power on Premium. and I liked what it did for overall MPG in the Rented V6. Enough to offset the higher cost in most cases. The 4.6, I do not know if premium is recommended or how high the compression is. Because of my general bias, I like to use top tier premium gas from high volume stations. I have never had water in the fuel, or repairs on the fuel or injection systems in many cars. I have had two of my daughters get puke gas in the Crown Vic's I supplied them. Never had a FI issue until they both (at different times) got cheapo gas with water in it. One station had to replace the fuel injection in one of the girls car and several other customers. Massive water and contamination problem.

If you can find non ethanol premium gas, like at Country Co-Op, that is amazing. Only 91 octane, but best mpg and power. The ethanol horrible BTU content, and other factors affects gas performance, even if it boosts the octane in premium to 93.

Your call on the gas.

I meant would you get 2011 4.6 or get a 2012 or newer V6?

And okay what gas stations have good gas? I was going to try premium, I have heard it makes a difference for most people.

I am not real familiar with high compression. Jeeps are not exactly speed demons

"floorboard only water" ... what a crock-o-crap.

My advice (same as the many others)... is do not own one out of warranty. These are not small-wallet cars.

Like a German car: Repairs are very expensive.
  • $3k head unit
  • $15k engine
  • $16k transmission
you get the idea.

This is very sound advice. Either choice worth considering the big advantage on the 2012s side is it would probably still be under the initial warranty and that could be very important especially depending on the trim level .
