  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am proud to say, i just picked up my genesis w/ tech package. simply amazing.... i do have a question though, with the navigation having a 40gb hard drive, can we use the hard drive to burn music to it?

Yes. When you load c.d.'s into the c.d. changer it should automatically rip it to the hard drive. At least, that's how it works on our Outlander.

Oooo, I don't think so. Nothing in the manual about that kind of functionality. such912 does raise a good point though...what the heck is on that 40GB drive. My version of Microsoft Street & Trips takes up 1GB on my PC. Being way generous, lets say the nav system takes up 3GB in the car, leaving 37GB unaccounted for. There is an operating system in there somewhere and my guess is it's embedded on a chip, because it boots very quickly. Then there are all the car settings the tech pack stores, let's give that another GB. 36GB left, and I have no clue what's in there. I thought maybe there would be a "copy" function from a USB thumb drive, but don't see it. The thumb drive just plays music. Heck, even the little portables from Garmin & Magellen can now display .jpg files [pictures]. Don't think we have that function either.

My best guess is, along with the variable cruise control, they just had to cut features to make the launch deadline. I think the drive is in place, and functionality like 'copy', 'backup', 'restore', etc. will come later via a TSB. This system can be very expandable, especially to support new DVD/CD formats as they become available. I also figure just as you can get web instructions to 'hack' your cell phone, it won't be too long before someone figures out how to hack into this sytem and add cool new functions.

BTW, congrats on your new purchase. You're gonna love it.:)

Congrats on the new car. Please post some pictures.

I assure you it takes up more than 3GB. You're looking at a state-of-the-art Nav system w/ millions of points of interest, advanced menus and graphics, and heavily detailed maping of the entire U.S. (North America??). Nissan/Infiniti's Nav system is a 30GB unit and only has 9.3GB available for music storage. Cadillac has a 40GB system in the CTS and only 10GB is available for music storage.

I wonder why Hyundai ditched the music storage ability so last minute. Now that you mention it, I don't see it in the brochure. Bummer.

As long as the iPod integration is really nice and fluid I don't care so much about the ability to store music on the 40GB.

I actually prefer the ability to keep my car music in perfect sync with my home music. This way I always know where everything is.

I know this is asking a lot, but can one of you post multiple photos of the screens that show the functionality of the iPod integration?

Yes, please! I would also love to see some shots of the various other screens (e.g., climate control settings, etc.) if you have the time. There is a definite lack of good detailed shots of the Nav display.

Welcome Such!
What color did you get?

Good conversation on that 40 GB Hard drive. Navigation can take up a fair amount of space, but not that much. Nav systems that are DVD based are usually 1 disc and that is less something like 4.7 Gig. But then there is that MOST network, speech recognition/voice commands, iPod interface and all the rest...

I called my dealer for the iPod cable. At first I confused them, he just called me back to say it is in stock for $29.

iPod integration was a requirement on my shopping criteria. They should train car sales reps to carry an iPod and demonstrate the feature to prospective customers. I walked out of the Mazda dealership because the poorly-trained sales rep (he did not deserve the title) could not answer basic questions on the topic.

I am going to go pick up the cable a little later and will post some Tech screen shots later.

Depending on the DVD disc, they can hold up to 17GB. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD

Also keep in mind that on DVD-based Navigation systems, the entire operating system is not incorporated on the DVD disc. The DVD contains mainly just roads, POIs, etc.

Ask and ye shall receive.:) Attached is a section of the Driver Information System manual that deals with AUX MODE. Within Aux Mode are all the directions for iPod functionality. Unfortunately, because of file size restrictions on this site, I had to use pictures instead of a PDF file. The pictures are labeled iPod 1-7, and seem to be in reverse order in the album. If you 'hover' over a picture with your mouse you will see the picture number.

You Rock! Thank you.

Technically, I was asking for actual photos of the screen in the car but this is OK too. Just wanted to check for Celine Dion and Mariah Carey albums!

Here are some screen shots of the iPod, phone and info systems. (Sorry for the glare on the images).

Simon,

You are the man! Thank you. :)

I have looked at the driver information system owners manual. I see in the aux. setting that you can play files from a USB memory stick and play files from an Ipod. Maybe I have missed it but I haven't saw where you can download files to the built in hard drive.

Maybe I have been mis-led by many people but practically everyone that I have talked to said that you could.

I agree with Jerrad when he says if you can't download music to the hard drive what good is it?

In my case I could have downloaded all our favorite songs to the hard drive just once and then we would be good to go................. no need to carry cd's or dvd's.
