  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Help: GPS is driving us nuts

Just came back from a trip to college station from north texas. I experienced what others experienced:

1. It leads me to lots of farm roads throughout the route, the software (not the maps) obviously do not have the right intelligence to make a sensible route. It was dark at night and not very funny. My previous acura has option to pick shortest distance, time and most direct route...

2. I know the announcement is not speed sensitive, but the highway exit is off. I can see in the signs on the road and also on the nav map but the announcement came one exit after and more than 1 mile off

3. Sometime it lost orientation and exit the farm road without reason and don't know where to go, when I should turn right it ask me to u-turn.

Lessons learned : google maps and bring it along and don't ask the ladies to follow you if you solely depends on the nav unit :o

As to #1, if you have a 2009, refer to page 210 in the large Driver Information System manual. There are options to recalculate to shortest time, shortest distance, minimize freeway, and minimize toll roads.

#2, that sounds like calibration problem, since my experience is the GPS is extremely accurate even at fast highway speeds.

#3, again, sounds like a calibration problem, perhaps it's having a hard time figuring out the direction of your car based on satellite fixes.

The two issues so far are that no matter that we "Set Home" to the correct address of their house, when you are at the map screen and tap the "Map" button it pops up on the top of the screen an address of a house 4 doors down...we can't figure out why this is and how in the world to change it.

There is an option to fine tune a location using the control knob. I live on a street that crosses a town line. The house numbers shift dramatically when crossing the town line, and neither the Gennie nav or my Garmin nav get it right.

With the Gennie if I program my home address it shows me as needing to be a bit down the road. To correct this I could park at the end of my driveway, go to the correct menu option, then use the control knob to move the cursor on the map to right over the icon that shows the car's location.

Hit enter, and viola, if I were to navigate "home" it would now take me to the updated location, the end of my driveway.

As far as wonky directions, my Garmin does that on occasion too.

Thanks for point out the option in #1, however I suspect there are some bugs or missing points in the maps causing the problem. Last night I drove home and it told me to turn in the right street, but immediately asked me to turn around. In fact, until I am 1 mile down then it figured out it's on the right path. The road has been there for more than 10 years and nothing has been changed..

For #2 and #3, I found the problem is only on some locations and not happens all the time. For instance, when I visit my friend last night, it arrived at destination only 2 houses off. However, it correctly identified my house.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Just a couple thing here.

1. I don't set "home" because if anyone ever steals the car, I don't want them to see where I live. If I wanted to set my own address, I would set it in the address list, just as I have other addresses there.

2. That "700 feet" scale, or any scale that is on the screen is in fact the distance of the small line under the "700 feet". I.E. if you take the length of that line, that same length elsewhere on the display is 700 feet. (or whatever scale you have set).

3. I always tell people that you still need to know where you are going and it is good to have glanced at that other thing called a "MAP", because at times, the Navi unit wants to send you through areas you don't want to go through. Example; once (not with the Genesis) I had to go to Bridgeport/Paradise Texas, and my Navi unit wanted to send me through Dallas, and later through Fort Worth. I knew better than to fight that traffic, so I opted to go around the South end of Forth Worth, then North around the western edge of Fort Worth. It was much easier. Also, whenever I go to Roswell NM, when I get to Post TX, that unit tries to send me to Lubbock TX, then to Roswell, but I know that Hwy 380 is directly into Roswell from Post.

Know a little of the route to your destination and use the Navi unit to fine tune the road for you.
I thought that not setting "HOME" was a good idea, so I used a neighbors address then I remembered that in the car is the registration papers and insurance papers as required by law and they contain your home address. So I hope my wife realizes that it's the neighbor's house and not ours that she pulled up to.

It is my understanding that there will be a navi upgrade within the next few months. If anyone gets any information that it is available, please post it here. Mine will be the first one done by my dealer. I have also been told on a forum, that the upgrade may delete the phone book! I sure hope they have fixed that by now.

I had a navi question and called Genesis Customer Service. Would you believe the agents did not even have an owners manual handy? Sadly, that is inept management.
