  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi I have a 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 I have replaced the water pump, and now my temperature gauge will not move it is stuck in cold. Also my coolant fan is not working causing the car to run hot. Can someone please help me. Thank you

sounds like your T-Stat is stuck, and/or you have air in the system.

coolant system is a sealed system, you need to get all the air out of the system. did you replace the t-stat when you did the water pump? always a good idea to do so. t-stats are cheap

Is it possible that you damaged your temperature sensor or the wiring to it? It seems like the electronics think that the engine is cold (gauge says so), so it sees no reason to turn the fan on.

+1 for air in the system. Get one of these, drain all of the coolant out and refill using this. I have had issues on several vehicles with trapped air after changed cooling system parts, and this thing works perfectly to fill with no air left trapped inside.

Did you do the work yourself????

I have noticed that as many as six different aftermarket thermostats are sold for this car.

As an ex auto mechanic, I prefer ones that meet higher iso manufacturing standards, and some have the ''jiggle'' bleeder. I first met the ''jiggle bleeder'' when changing out a factory Camry thermostat. The Asians put a hole at 12:00 o' clock noon on the thermostat with a rod smaller than the hole. That rod can move back and forth (from engine vibration) and allows air to pass and move to the highest spot in the engine/radiator, clearing air locks. Some hondas actually had a special bleed screw to get rid of air. The standard rule is: fill the radiator with water and antifreeze 85% full, with the radiator cap off, assuming the thermostat is new and been installed properly, you either drive the car or let it idle until the coolant is warm enough to open the thermostat. While the thermostat is cold or closed, the small hole AT THE TOP OF THE THERMOSTAT allows air to return to the top of the radiator and help clear the hoses and water pump of air. VERY IMPORTANT !

Assuming the radiator is 90% + full, as you run the engine, the temperature will go up. Any engine running will be too hot to touch in ten minutes. If your engine has been running for a while, if you turn the heater on and hot air blows out, then you have heat ! If you have heat, then the engine temperature gauge has to rise and will normally rise. So if the car has been running for ten minutes and the engine is hot, and the gauge is not rising, WHAT CHANGED ? It worked before, right ? Changing a waterpump is tricky. Almost always you change the thermostat at the same time. Work has to be done right, system has to be filled, air pockets have to be cleared. Never damage things as you take them apart !

I'd be willing to bet the thermostat is stuck open or possibly there's air in the system. I always replace the thermostat when doing a water pump simply because they're cheap and easy to replace when you've got the system evacuated. Typically with air in the system you'll get a sudden spike in temperature which goes back down so I'm not completely sold on air in the system.
