If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Help Me Decide between a 2015 5.0 or 3.8 Please

I bought my 2015 Genesis 5.0 in April and I paid a little over 20k for it with under 40k miles. The only issue I've had so far was the sunroof sticking. Because it is still under factory warranty, I took it to the local Hyundai dealership and they replaced it free of charge. That and I recently upgraded the DRLs from incandescent to LED. Other than that, I have been extremely satisfied with my purchase. I'm sure you will get better gas mileage with the 3.8, but I personally prefer the HP. I still think the 2015 Genesis sedan is a well kept sleeper and I get a ton of compliments. Enjoy.

Regarding the warranty; my CaFax says warranty is expired. I thought the 10 year 100k only came with Certified Used from a dealer.

Pulled from autoguide.com:

Almost all Genesis warranty coverage is transferable to a subsequent vehicle owner, but the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is not. Instead, if you sell your vehicle before this coverage period ends, the next owner will have powertrain parts covered under the remainder of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Looks like I bought a car! I got the 2015 Genesis with the 3.5L engine. A deciding factor was the mileage. Only 27,000 miles. Carfax is clean, 2 owners, serviced regularly from the same dealership for both owners. Sale price $20,000

I got my car through the local Audi dealership. It had been traded in for a new Audi. I purchased an aftermarket warranty through them. When I told them about the sunroof, they said that the factory warranty would have to be expired before the aftermarket warranty would kick in. They called the Hyundai dealership, who told them my factory warranty was in effect until March. They wound up replacing the entire sun roof, including the motor and tracks. Didn't cost me a dime.

Sunroofs are a problem area on the DH sedans.

I have a 2015 5.0 Ultimate. I love the car. The 5.0 is very smooth and quick. The 3.8 will get better mileage with OK acceleration. Not sure about the smoothness of the 3.8.

Hi- I am looking at two 2015 Genesis models. One is a 3.8 engine the other is 5.0
The 5.0 is $22,800 and the 3.8 is $19,600
Both are very clean, 2 owner cars.
My obvious worry is expensive, surprise repairs.
Which would you choose?
Thanks so much!
The two models are similar in terms of the chassis design except for the 5.0 ultimate which has active suspension and a power trunk. Both addition options will be expensive to replace so the 5.0 ultimate will be the more expensive model to own over time.

The other 3.8 and 5.0 models will be the same in terms of reliability with the 5.0 V8 edging out the 3.8 due to having a slightly different timing chain tensioner design which is more durable and easier to replace. The 5.0 dual timing chain tensioners are located outside the engine; whereas the 3.8 has internal timing chain tensioners that requires the entire front engine cover to be removed to replace it.

Timing chain tensioners can become a major issue after 100k miles on any modern engine and the Genesis is no exception. Bad timing chain tensioners can cause the chain system to jump teeth and cause valve damage, but usually just make a rattle noise first.

I would buy the non-ultimate 5.0 model if reliability and repair cost is a major concern . If gas mileage is an issue than buy a smaller car.:)

What it takes to change a 3.8 Genesis timing chain and tensioner.

The 5.0 timing system is similar to older 4.6, but improved.

I was reviewing the CarFax in more detail. The car was originally offered for sale by the dealer on 10/2014 with 12 miles on the odometer. The car wasn't sold until 11/29/2014 with 1200 miles recorded. Where did those 1200 miles come from? Demo?

I notice that on 06/2015 the dealer changed the oil and reported 2712 miles on the engine first oil change).
The next oil change was 04/2018 with 10,590 miles. 7800 miles seems a bit too long between oil changes. Unless it was changed at a private garage. Apparently it was not driven hardly at all for the first 3 years.
Next dealer oil change was 9/2018 at 14,747
Then 2/2019 at 19,204
09/2019 at 23,650
And finally 12/2020 at 27,852

Does this look like a good history?

the gap on the 2nd and 3rd oil change makes little sense. Who waits 3 years for an oil change on a car like this? Literally no one.

Fwiw the OEM recommended oil change is every 12 months or 10k miles.

In any event, if you already bought it then don't worry about it and just take good care of it.

Unless its a mistake by CarFax. Or JiffyLube

Not a perfect history, but it seems fine since these cars are not raced or pushed too hard normally for the few extended oil intervals that it has to be an issue. I assume that not much damage was done to the engine if any at all. I personally will not continue to run oil that long in a engine that I will keep for a while, especially if the factory warranty has expired.

5k miles oil change intervals tops for me. Oil is cheap; engines are not.

Its not so much the mileage between oil changes that bother me, it's the time frames.
Car was hardly driven. Hopefully it sat in someones garage under a car cover.
I wonder if I phone the original dealer, maybe they can look up service history
