Help me decide

I'm looking at two black/black '09 Genesis 4.6 for sale in my area, neither are CPO. One is base and the other tech. Here is the breakdown on what I know on each so far. Any suggestions as far as questions for the dealers or things to look for specifically would be greatly appreciated.

Minor front left bumper repair from a car to car collision (waiting for invoice on repair). I noticed the trim piece sticking up slightly when I test drove it.

This one is for sale through a large dealership network in my area. They are a one price shop that doesn't negotiate. The benefit to the network though is that for a one time $35 you get free oil changes for 3 years/45k miles if you keep up with the scheduled maintenance at their dealership (which they have a Hyundai dealership literally right next to my work). Downside is waiting for those car washes as a co-worker has a Hyundai and says it takes a hour+ to get it in and done most times.

I noticed one small paint chip/scratch on the front left quarter panel right at the seam/gap where it meets the bumper area.
Also noticed the steering wheel leather is rubbed off/worn quite a bit on this one. Is that common on the Genesis? Makes me worry about the quality of leather used in the seats as it seems the same thickness relatively.
This one is for sale at a small used dealer, which I believe might be willing to budge on price or give me a bit more for my high mileage trade-in.

Assuming the CarFax comes back clean on the one with tech are the miles pretty much negligible when they are both sub 40K? Nothing in tech package really is screaming must have to me, but the wife likes the idea of the front/rear sensors and backup cam for the 3 times a year she might drive 'my' car.

What else should I look at or ask about?

Test drive them both at night if you can. I found the upgraded headlight package on the '09 Tech package considerably better than the regular headlights. I didn't plan on buying the Tech package initially - I'm one of those folks that doesn't trust car electronics to last as long as the vehicle mechanicals typically. But the difference in night visibility was just too large to ignore.

2009 V8 comes standard with Premium Package (14 speaker Lexicon, etc). Only the V6 is available in Base trim.

Don't take it to the dealer for a car wash, especially black. The car wash will scratch the hell out of the finish. Been there, done that. I have a thread on my paint restoration with pics.

As for the oil change package, they are not that great. The dealer makes their own rules on what you have to have done for service, which is BS. They just try to make more money on crap you don't need. Only go by what the owners manual states to do.

I am not sure I can recommend any 2009 with its factory suspension. I upgraded the suspension on my 2009 to 2010/2011 specs (spring, shocks/struts, and rear stabilizer).

I disagree. I've had 4 prior german cars and I really like the 2009 suspension, which is definitely more sporting than Lexus and Domestics.

The Genesis 2009 suspension was fine on smooth roads, but was a bit out of control on rough roads, even at slow speeds. The problem was that the springs overpowered the shocks and rear stabilizer bar.

The 2010-2011 suspension is still quite firm, but without the wild gyrations that sometimes can occur with the 2009. At no time am I suggesting that the Genesis suspension should be soft, just that it should not loose control on rough roads. This problem was noted by Car and Driver video review, when they noted that the 2009 Genesis was not a firm as BMW 5 or Infinity M, but the later two had much better control on bad roads (specifically at Hyundai's test facility in the Southern California desert). So it is not simply a matter of suspension firmness vs softness, but a question of proper tuning for suspension control.

One caveat though, is that I had an early 2009, and Hyundai made some tuning changes to the suspension mid-year 2009, so after that correction the later 2009 ones are not quite as bad. Of course, Hyundai made even more suspension tuning changes in 2012, presumably because the R-Spec retained the old suspension for those who preferred that.

On another note, Lexus now offers a much firmer suspension on the LS 460 Sport, and of course the GS line.

Based on my research on this forum, 2009's with a build date after April 8, 2009 have the modified rear suspension.

Even so, given the same choice as the OP, I would go with the Tech. Try to get an extended warranty that covers the electronics.

Just went through the same tough decision, for 5K more I decided to get a new with the 3.8. Better MPG, a little quicker than the 4.6, and a lot of refinement, and upgrades. The new lights front and rear look great. I rather have new with the warranty for just a little more.

If possible I'd go with a 2010 vs. a 2009 fully loaded (tech + premium package for the V6)...be it a V8 or a V6 both with all options gives you the radar guided cruise control and navigation. In the 2009's the cruise control isn't available and navigation was optional, plus the 2010's suspension is a bit more forgiving.

As I was also confused. The slowest 0-60 time ever reported for the 4.6 was 5.9 and the fastest reported for the GDI 3.8 is 5.7. The fastest time for the 4.6 was 5.3. Both may feel similar at low speeds, but highway passing is unreal in the V8. Same for when I floor it at around 20 or 25 mph, the V8 practically rips your head from your neck.

Not too sure what is accurate, posted numbers are 5.5 for the 4.6, 5.4 for the 3.8 and 4.7 for 5.0. A V8 will always feel better, but IMO it just does not matter. I don't find the 3.8 with 333 hp underpowered, it feels a bit faster than my LS430.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I may end up looking at a 2010 3.8 w/tech as these guys didn't want to budge on price for the 2nd one (w/tech). Bummer to because we were only $1500 apart and I had my vehicle's title in hand ready to do the deal. I've ruled out the first as the fender bender repair seems to be some shoddy work and I found numerous other body imperfections on it once it was cleaned up (first time I saw/drove it the body was dusty/dirty from a unexpected rain that morning).

Interesting note though, the 2nd choice w/tech they had sent out for detail as I said the interior was dusty. Well the detailer did a great job inside and out....except the rims. Seems he used some acid cleaner on them and the hyper silver is coming off all over. The dealer is going to go after him, but I don't really want the vehicle now even if they get the rims repainted. Other odd thing was both key fobs would not lock/unlock the vehicle or pop the trunk. The car would start fine with the fob inside, but would not chirp/beep at you if left running and the fob was walked away from the vehicle. Is this a known issue? Easy fix?

Potty you called it, except for the scummy dealers never called back, but I think they paid too much at auction for the '09 4.6 w/tech. I waited and a deal popped last week, closed on it Monday of this week. 2010 4.6 w/tech 13K miles for $25K all in. I'm one happy dude right now as this one is black on black interior (didn't like the burgundy/red on the '09), it's a year newer and almost 1/3 the miles for the same price! Unfortunately it still has the orig Dunlops on it and they are almost toast so I get to buy new summer rubber and a set of wheels/tires for the MN winters. Used that to my advantage in the negotiations though.

I can strongly recommend Morrie's, if you're in the Cities. They will even store your winter tires at no charge if you buy the tires from them. Their installed price was within $5 of Tirerack, so it was a no-brainer when I bought mine.
