  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

hi guys

i was driving and misjudged my right side while parking and hit the concrete wall and made a huge gash as you can see, the side mirror is gone, doors are not working. I am in vermont now and heading back tomo to NY, I have towed it to the hyundai dealer at vermont for now. I am planning to talk to them tomo. My questions are

1. will it be possible for them to do something with the r side mirror tomo itself
2. should i call insurance and start claim or will hyundai service help me with the claim
3. can anyone give me a rough estimate of the time needed for the repairs and/or the cost it it is the only exterior damage that is seen

thanks

You need to call your insurance company as soon as possible. I doubt any dealer would have the side mirror in stock to replace it tomorrow. That looks like thousands of $$$$ of damages there, misjudged is the understatement of the year.

i know.. the biggest thing is will i be able to drive back or if i leave it here to get it repaired how will i be able to pick it back, will they send to the nearest hyundai in NY or will i need to come back and pick it up?

Misjudged while parking? We're you trying to park at 60 mph? Call your insurance company (and maybe have a better story as the damage is not in synch with your description of what "happened").

Also, this has nothing to do with Hyundai Service so not sure why you think they would help you with the claim (other than maybe providing a repair estimate - though the insurance adjuster normally does that)?

i know, was turning from the road and hit the side and panicked

Just call your insurance ASAP and as Nikgen said have a better story about the accident. Hyundai Service has nothing to do with this.
I think the car is drivable, the damage involve two doors and two fenders, the price will be no less than $5000 but the big problem will be the time, probably there is no door or fender in stock at any place and the parts will have to be ordered.

The other thing is can i still pay out of pocket if I open a claim if I want to. In the long run the increased premiums may not be worth it..

As the others have said; make up a better story and let the insurance take care of that. I'm pretty sure the damage will be waaaay over 5k.

The car looks drivable. I agree, the damage is probably in the $5k range and insurance increase will likely be less than that. You can also get an estimate from a body shhop tomorrow before you make your decision.

A first glass repair IMO will be in the 7000.00 to 8500.00 dollar range.

IMO that's still probably on the low end and my best guess is insurance is the only way to go even with increased premiums. That damage is not a no claim DIY repair IMO.

I'm not sure what sort of "STORY LINE" one could come up with to cover that sort of total side damage from stem to stern so to speak.

This is going to be a very painful and $$$$$$ mis-judgement so get the extra large jar of vaseline.

I also agree that this has absolutely nothing to do with Hyundai or any dealership so don't expect any help or assistance on this ... this one is totally on you

The dealer should be able to tell if the car is safely drivable. Otherwise you should call your insurance as soon as possible.

Some states also require that accidents over a certain amount must be reported to the police (NJ is that way, I think it is over $500). If your state is that way I am sure you'll be over the amount...

A little dent on a bumper nowadays is around $1000. This is $10,000 plus damage and a good few weeks for parts/repair IMHO. Hopefully parts do not need to come from Korea. Best of luck.

Would that hold true on private property such as a parking facility?

There's a property owner in Vermont looking for repairs to his concrete wall. He's at the police station now, attempting to find the culprit. So where is the perp? He's here, trying to make a plan to flee the state. Or, he could report the accident to the police, as required by law. Yes, then the next step is contact his insurance company.

10k was my first thought when I saw the pictures. Hard to imagine how a vertical concrete wall could cause that scrape all along the side of the car.

To me, it looks like there had to some metal on the concrete wall. That said, without a doubt you need to contact insurance ASAP to notify them of the claim. As others said, the dealership has nothing to do with this aside from the fact they may end up performing the work. Once the claim is created, then whoever does the estimate and the body shop will work with the insurance adjuster.

Also, assuming there was property damage, that will need to be dealt with the insurance as well.

As an aside, while I understand the desire to not file a claim in some instances, for something like this, why would you ever consider that? Why pay for insurance if you're not going to use it?

I had a mini van backed into my side. Minor scratch to side mirror cover, but dented front fender, and driver door. Visibly looked way less destructive than yours. The other driver's insurance paid $5300. 3 weeks of repairs. New car smell gone from doors left open 24/7. New paint never matched 100% to factory. That was one year old BMW 535i from 2009. Your damage likely close to $10k. Time for reap all that insurance premiums we paid over the years.
