  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all! Im new to this forum.
Im in the market for the Hyundai Genesis sedan. Since it is new to me, I dont know what I should take.
Used 2015 Genesis 5.0 Ultimate package (28,900 miles). Selling price is $29,000.
Certified 2016 Genesis 3.8 Ultimate package (18,000 miles). Selling price is $32,000.
Which one should you go for?
Does the V8 consume a lot of gas compare to the V6?
Any problem so far with your genesis?

Thank you.

I would select the certified 2016 Genesis 3.8 Ultimate package for the following reasons:
1. Unless you are a speed demon you will find that the 3.8 engine is more than adequate for normal everyday driving. In the sport mode it has even more acceleration. Take one for a test drive and decide.
2. Mileage is lower
3. It is certified.
4. The 5.0 will consume more gas. Any time you have a large engine it will consume more gas. This is why the trend these days is smaller engines with turbo's. Even the new base model 911 went to a smaller engine with turbo.
5. The insurance on the 5.0 may be more.
6. The V-6 is very reliable

The 2016 because the exterior lighting got sorted out that year. It's CPO.

Thank you @silbermal and @seejay!

How do you like your car so far? any regret?

A CPO car has the extended powertrain warranty restored to 10 years or 100K miles (normally only available to original purchaser). The 2016 is more reliable, as there were some lighting and electrical quirks with the 2015.

You can check the mileage ratings at the EPA site. Even if you can't find older year models, the newer ones are probably the same.

I don't see the CPO as being much of a factor. For less than the $3K price difference, you could get a platinum extended warranty on the 2015 that would be better than the CPO. So then it would come down to model year, does that make a difference to you? Check with you insurance, any significant difference that would matter? You will get poorer fuel mileage with the 5.0, but how much driving do you do? Will it be enough to matter? One thing that seems to bother a lot of 2015 owners is the DRLs. In 2015 the DRLs are the amber turn signal lights. In 2016 they went to the LEDs that wrap around the headlight lens. You didn't mention it, but what are the exterior/interior colors? Do you like one over the other? I have the 5.0 & love it. However, I don't care about the fuel mileage or the amber DRLs.

The one thing I do notice about the 3.8 v6 Genesis sedans (with the coupe, I didn't care) is that they are a bit rough at idle with heavy AC load and buzz slightly at 900 RPM or so. You can see the buzz in the rear view mirror. The Genesis or Equus v8 with motor mounts in good condition have none of that. The 3.3T is another beast altogether--that's a nice mill.

Thank you all for the reply!

I can feel rough at idle too. It is a bit annoying to me. But I dont think it is a big problem, isnt it?
These two cars are both white. and yes, if the exterior lighting is different then I would take the 2016.

I had the motor mounts changed under warranty. There seems to be an informal technical service bulletin about them, and I think the new ones being made are an upgrade in quiet.

I have a 2017 G80 and love it. You should know that the Genesis is only second to Porsche in owner satisfaction and only 1 of 2 cars that got the best safety ratings from the NHSTA. It is truly the undiscovered value for cars. Costs less that $16,000 than a similarly equipped BMW 540.

since you mentioned the BMW, I came from the 2014 X5 F15 xDrive. Hopefully, I will not disappointed. :)
I test drove one, and really like it. the interior is just like my X5, nothing downside at all, that made me impressed. However, I some of members here talked about the problems that they had have with the engine, somehow made me nervous a little bit. But for sure, I will get that 2016 though. Please nothing come mine, LOL

What exterior light upgrades are on the 2016? I can feel a slight vibration but honestly I think the ecm is not bumping idle high enough with heavy AC usage.

It appears that it is not that simple, at least in my case, there was a considerable vibration that was much worse with a heavy AC load, and it got worse as time went on. A visual inspection of the mount revealed it was collapsing and the LH and RH mounts were changed.

I own a 2015 5.0 and I would say get the 2015 5.0 all the way. I got a chance to drive the 3.8 for a day and I drove the 5.0 for a day before I bought the 5.0. It was not a hard decision at all after you drive the 5.0. The extra power in the 5.0 makes any type of acceleration and normal driving effortless. Yes, the 3.8 does provide very adequate power but the even in "sport mode" will not give you the extra 119hp and 90 lbs of torque that the 5.0 has. Plus the 5.0 has "sport mode" too. Plus I'll take the larger 19" wheels and tires, quad exhaust tips over the "led" turn signal that the 2016 has over the 2015. Plus the 5.0 Ultimate has continuous damping control suspension. The only thing that the 3.8 had that I wanted since I'm in the US is the AWD but in Kansas we don't get to much snow so the 50/50 weight balance on the 5.0 and winter tires are fine for me. Although the 2015 is not CPO you can buy an extended bumper to bumper which is better than the CPO from Hyundai. I purchased the top 6/100k miles Hyundai warranty with a $100 deductible for about $1700. The $3000 you are saving for the best Genesis in the 2015 5.0 you can buy the warranty and pocket $1300. Good luck in making your decision I love my Genesis and you can't go wrong with either one IMO.

Thank you for your opinion. I will test drive the 5.0 tomorrow to see how it goes.

Take an extended test drive on roads you are familiar with. You do not want to have buyer's remorse.

  • Does the 2016 have a HUD? Once you've gone HUD you'll never want to go back.
  • With regards to the engines, due to the gradual demise of the V8, in a few years I predict that the V8s will be a bit more exclusive. Not collector's status or anything (perhaps in 25 years), but generally speaking you'd have one of the last V8 sedans. I also predict that the after-market community, which is just now starting to crack and build stuff for the V8s, will eventually break it wide open. Once a lot of these Genesis models reach their 3rd owners, the V8 models will be coveted for their potential performance. Even if you don't want after-market mods, someone who does may be willing to spend a bit more when you're ready to sell.
  • Also, check the manufacturing location of the 2016; some are made in Asan, the majority made at the Ulsan plant. The Ulsan plant has a lot more experience building large RWD sedans than the Asan plant (which builds the Sonata, the Azera, and the Hyundai Aslan). Make of that what you will.
  • The amber DRL thing with the 2015s is definitely annoying.
  • The V6 handles better. It's definitely noticeable.

Best advisory yet!

It does come with the HUD, and you are right. It is useful.
The car made in Ulsan, Korea.
Thank you for your advice.

I will check this when I do a oil change this weekend. How bad was the vibration?

I went with the v6 just cause I have a fun car that makes 4 times what this v6 makes. Also the v8 doesn't have awd until now I guess.
