  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Mom found a GV70 she likes. She has a deposit on it.
I am new to new car buying.
Right now she is paying MSRP plus a $399 prep fee. They tried to make her get vin etching for 300. I looked and that was a scam, so they won't.
I'm wondering what the market value for these other services might be to negotiate. She seems to want them.
I saw you can get door edge guards for cheap on amazon. They want $290 installed.
Tint is not Ceramic, they want $290.
A poly spray paint protection on the car is $1200. (I am pretty lost on the different paint protection options.

As it stands now we are picking it up this afternoon, and will take it back if she wants any of it.
They seem overpriced.

Thanks!

Simple. NONE of the above. The paint protection is probably worth $100.
The tint price not too bad if it was top material.
Just say NO.

I would opt out of all those addons, not worth it in my opinion

If you want options, get them after the sale at places that specialize in those services, places that will offer their own warranty and service after the sale. It's more time on your part, but you are likely to get more for less in the end.

Dealer prep is just a money grab. Like they don't prep the cars without the fee ... ? :) If they can't take it off because it's "automatic", then it's not something that should be charged extra for. Like charging extra for the coffee in the employee break room. that coffee is there regardless, it's a cost of selling cars. Cars come off a trailer dirty and covered in plastic protection, they all need prepped as part of the process. Been this way for decades. The fee however is kind of new and not universal.

Ask if you can take it off and prep it yourself to save $400. They will obviously say no, but then you can ask "if it's an automatic unavoidable cost of selling cars, why charge extra for it?" There's no coffee fee, show room window washing fee, internet fee, power or water bill fees, and yet they have all these costs too.

Doc fees are kind of the same, but so long as they are small, it's harder to argue, and they have been "normalized" for a long time now.

Not worth fighting over if it means not getting what you want for a price you are willing to pay, but that's a 100% cash grab fees. MSRP plus those doc fees isn't a bad price these days, and the prep fee is less than some others are charging, so it's still not a bad deal.

Thanks, yeah, thats what I am thinking. Mom is 73. Might see if they will do that stuff for 1k if mom really wants that stuff.
I read up on dealer prep fees, it should be included in msrp, but it is a sellers market right now. No inventory.

Thanks again.

Thanks for all the replies. We pick it up tomorrow, excited for her, Her last new car was her 2008 Lexus ES 350. This should be a nice upgrade.
I talked her into it, reading about all the cool safety features and good reviews.
Been reading on this forum.
Thanks for all the help.

Dealer specifically told me that Genesis pays them a fee for prepping the car but it doesn't cover everything they have to do. Basically sold me on not agreeing to pay the fee!

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Got 100 off vin etching, 100 off door guards (plastic), was done when asked not to when we showed up.
Declined everything else. I wrote a bad review on Google, but deleted it the next morning, Didn't want them hating on my 73 yr old mom.
I had to leave to pick up my 101 yr old grandma when the warranty sell came in. They talked her into the basic one, I think she got a "deal". Supposedly paying for the regular checkups ahead of time, they collect the potential Interest every year.
She wanted the car, I tried not to ruin it. I guess average is 800 over MSRP, she paid about that much plus the Warranty.

Just sold her 2008 Lexus ES 350 for 11k. Glad to be done with it all.
I read the bad resale value on Genesis, but I figure it was new 5+ years ago, they have come a long way, and resale value should be a lot better in 5 years, she holds onto her cars, but in 5 years may want something that truly drives it self.

What is also important is that she likes it and is happy in the end.
Great you can still take grandma for a ride too!!!!

Dealer "add-ons" are a scam... After owning Hyundai cars (including 2x2015 Genesis )... I have had it with this company and bought a Volvo CX90 T6. At first they tried to con me into paying 5K over sticker. I finally told the salesman that I will not pay a penny more than sticker. They tried to get more out of me, I walked... they stopped me and said OK :-)... I signed the docs.....(by then I was beat so I trusted them and signed) When I got home i noticed a charge of 699 for paint protection (Zurich which sells on eBay for 19.99) and "theft deterrent for 299.00... I went the next day and they offered to take the car back. I said OK, then they tried to give me stuff for free that was worth NOTHING.. They finally relented and agreed to issue a check :-)....... BUYERS BEWARE...

Do you mind sharing how much she put down for the deposit?
