In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I have a 2016 3.8 that needs a new HID bulb on the passenger side.
Is this a warrantied item?
If not, how difficult is this to replace, do I really need to remove the bumper cover?

Not a warranty item if it's the lamp. If the ballast fails that might be warranty.

You need to remove headlight housing to correctly replace lamp. The lamp is held in by a bracket with two screws and is VERY hard to take off without dropping parts into the housing.

I replaced the HID bulb on the driver’s side today. (2016 3.8 sedan) The bulb I bought was the exact same bulb as the OE - a Sylvania DS1 purchased at CARQUEST.

Brief recap of steps:
  • Remove plastic shroud at front of engine compartment
  • Reposition diagnostic module behind driver side headlight
  • Remove dust cap from headlight behind HID bulb
  • Use 1/4” socket wrench, short extension and Phillips head bit to begin to loosen inboard screw
  • Use #2 Phillips head screwdriver to take screw almost all the way out
  • Note: the screw isn’t captured/retained by the U-shaped bracket, but in my case - YMMV - the bracket sorta hung onto the screw. Once it felt as though the screw was on the verge of coming out, I was able to bend the bracket back a bit and as I was doing so, realized the screw was completely out and the bracket had retained it
  • If you’re really worried about dropping the screw into the housing, stuff a clean rag beneath it
  • I did not remove the outboard bracket screw. I just bent the bracket out of the way and pulled the bulb out of the headlight housing
  • Unplugged the harness from the old bulb, plugged it into the new bulb, and reversed the above steps. I taped the screw to my screwdriver with painter’s tape so I could be confident I could get it started ok. The U bracket bent back into place easily, by the way.
I was quoted $245 from one dealer for the bulb, and $340 from another. Plus labor. Holy crap! My cost was $107 including tax.

A good work light is essential.

You overpaid. That D1S Basic is about $66 on Amazon.

Yeah, thanks for your input. I originally bought two bulbs from Amazon and one arrived broken; packaging was absurdly inadequate. Returned them for a refund (@ that point I was planning on doing both bulbs) and bought locally.

Update: did the passenger side bulb this morning. All in, took ~45 minutes, taking my time. Same basic method. This small 1/4” drive socket w/ a Phillips tip made the job much easier:

did you disconnect battery before doing all this?

thanks.

KJC2050 - was it difficult for you to get the screw off that holds the u bracket? Mine is on so tight, I cant get it off. tried multiple bits.....

Hmm... no, it wasn’t. The bit/tip I used is a PH2. It required a bit of force, but both sides broke loose relatively easily.

Thanks. Bad luck here. The screw won’t budge. Might have to take it to the dealer.

I just replaced the turn signal lamp and did NOT think to inspect my headlamp bulb while down in there - which headlamp bulb do I have? My manual states its an H11 and a HB3. As a point of reference, the same manual says I have a 28W LED for the turn signal lamp. Instead it was a 2357 incandescent bulb. So... I don't trust the manual. I think I have an HID headlamp and I'm asking for guidance on how to verify without taking the whole thing apart again (this way when one goes bad I can order the replacement before taking everything apart).

Since the car was back together I thought I'd do an inspection while my wife flipped the beams. When viewing from the front, I have what appears to be a single bulb round lens perhaps 2 1/2" in diameter (slightly cloudy/translucent, not clear when viewed from the front). When the low beams are on, it appears there are 2 small rectangular shaped light emitters in line, close together, emitting the light. When you switch to the high beam setting, it is definitely more bright, but still the same appearance of the same 2 light emitters. I'm guessing I actually have an HID.

Can anyone agree with my deduction or give me another way to determine w/o disassembly? Alternatively, if NOT HID - are there actually 2 separate lenses? thanks

What trim do you have. Signature, tech, or ultimate? What year is your car.
My 2015 3.8 ultimate has single round lens. Bi-xenon headlamps. And incandescent amber turn signal bulbs.
On my car there is an eyelid shutter inside the projector lens assembly that controls the low and high beams utilizing only one HID xenon bulb. The type is D1S.

btw....there is a difference between HID and HID Xenon.

Is there an upgrade bulb for the car without getting into the blue light spectrum?

2015 genesis 5.0, build date Jan 2015.

Biswasd sounds the same.

Hi everyone, got a quick question about the headlight replacement. I got a 2015 Tech with the D1S, tried to swap the old ones with some new OSRAM ones. I was able to install the new bulbs, they fit very easily into the square slot. Despite this, the light pattern is completely off. The lights are very bright, but they're pointed almost straight down and can't see past 7-10 feet in front of me. Is there anything that I'm missing so the light pattern isn't all skewed?

Were the new bulbs made in China?!?! Sorry for my cynicism!

All jest aside, I've not studied these - I believe the beam focus/direction is directed by a combination of the bulb insertion into the socket (keyed I remember) and the orientation of the entire lens assembly in the car. If you removed the lens assembly, my guess is that you may have misaligned it re-installing. If you did not remove the lens assembly, check to make sure the bulb keys are properly aligned. If all is well on both points, I'd say the bulb is a POS.
