  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

You are correct. It's all very shallow. But it's a fact of life. You can go all the way to the other side of the spectrum and be Zen-like and decide not to care AT ALL what anyone thinks - and never wear deodorant. It's really up to the individual. But that person isn't getting any good jobs or promotions any time soon. Not unless he/she is the only applicant. In most social situations (these days), image is important. Times have changed. This is the wonderful world we live in.

All this discussion of image cracks me up. Of course it's true that in certain situations the image you portray can benefit/harm you, but in many other instances it's a completely shallow, empty endeavour to focus so much attention on one's image. Working out more, getting plastic surgery, wearing the right clothes, or buying an expensive car simply to keep up with or better others should not be anyone's goal in life.

In most cases you're working hard to impress people you don't know or like. What's the point in that?

It's all based on human emotions and Darwin. The car is more than a transportation device it's an emotional purchase, and the "love affair" with cars is a visceral and powerfully emotional relationship.
Flowers that are more vibrant, bigger, have more fragrance, attract more bees. People who are taller, in better shape, drive nicer cars, wear nicer clothes are going to get more attention. Whether it's good attention or not is not the point, it's that more bees are going to be buzzing around them.

Can we talk about the Genesis now? ;)

All true.. Now even the male will often pick the man who appears to be in better shape - for other reasons. The man in better shape will appear to have more self-respect and self-discipline. The fat, lazy guy will more often than not lose that battle. Even bald men have a hill to climb here. Yes, this is all very shallow - but it's a fact of life.

Now if the male boss has serious self-esteem issues, he may choose otherwise for various reasons - such as:

1. Not drawing too much of the attention of the opposite sex away from himself
2. Having a hatred of people he may have had bad experiences with in the past (getting picked on, for example)

Psychology is fun...
Correction:

An insecure boss will hire someone based on superficial attributes that do not directly affect job performance, and a secure person will hire based on the expected performance of the individual.

There is no association that I have ever seen between being fat and lazy, unless someone is doing physical labor. For technical type jobs, fat people often work much longer hours, which may be one reason they are fat, so if there is a correlation, it the opposite of what you suggest.

Whether a boss is insecure or not, if two candidates are equal in all ways besides physical appearance, the one with the better physical appearance will be hired 9 times out of 10 or better. If two vehicles look exactly the same, perform exactly the same, have the same features and are identical in every way - even badge - but one is less expensive - which one would you pick? I'm pretty sure EVERYONE would pick the less expensive vehicle. Especially since the badge is the same and there's no way to tell that you spent more - if you picked the more expensive car.

People who are out of shape are generally looked at as having low self-discipline - because where there's a will, there's a way. I sit down all day long at my computer. It's not easy getting into and/or staying in shape with this type of lifestyle. However, I go to the gym twice a day and train in mixed martial arts at night. That, my friend, is the self-discipline that a fat guy doesn't have.

Where there's a will, there's a way... I MAKE time...

Nevermind, it's not worth it.
