  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I find it peculiar that the homelink buttons will only work with the ignition fully on. Is there a setting I might have missed or otherwise a hack to power it up with the ignition off?

Thanks Steve. I kinda figured something like that.

If it’s any consolation, any newer (2016 and later) vehicle I’ve driven is this same way. Probably industry standard with the manufacturers.

My wife's 2019 Santa Fe ultimate homelink still works with ignition off. Was surprised being that all Genesis models don't.

I've only had the car 2 weeks so haven't had a chance to dig into power dist. schematics yet. I'm wondering if the homelink module could be powered full time? If it's on a canbus, would doing so prevent other modules from powering down with IGN. off? Just thinking out loud here.

My wife's 2019 Mazda CX-5 homelink works with the ignition off. It's handy.

There are many cars being broken into these days. In Dallas I see them on the Ring app called Neighbors, there are several every day within a few miles of my house. And this is the good part of town!
My G37 used to open the garage via Homelink without the ignition off, it did concern me when I'd leave the car outside, on the street. On the other hand, you would expect cars with a garage door opener programmed into homelink would be in the garage and not on the street.

These days, I prefer that safety over the convenience.

A bit annoying amid the security concern!
I just found it out with my new G70's new feature.
The wife's '20 Santa Fe is old school so do my other rides.
We always park the cars inside so this is something I need to remember.

I’ve hated this logic too. I find it counterintuitive. I pull into my garage and turn off the engine then close the garage. I don’t want to hit the button to close the garage with the engine running. I know if I do that sequence back to back it won’t be enough time to build up enough carbon monoxide but still doesn’t seem safe.

I’ve felt the same way for the last few years.

Once the door starts down you hit the off button, about 2 seconds.
I leave it open and hit the button by the door going into the house.

I know I could do that but I sometimes have dogs with me that will attempt to make a break for it so I prefer to close the garage before I get out of the car. Just another minor inconvenience.

You can always turn the ignition on without starting the car in order to use the Homelink.

Another issue is that the doors may be programmed to unlock when the car is turned off.

We like to pull into the garage with the car doors locked, turn off the car, lower the garage door, then unlock the car, exit the car, and then unlock the house door and enter the house. It's not a bad idea for safety. Criminals are waiting for garage doors to open so they can steal cars and enter the homes.

Attached are two photos from a neighbor's surveillance system showing where she pulled into her garage, left car running, ran inside to drop off some food, and criminals jumped in and stole her SUV. You can see her running out after it as they back out. Also including photo of the two punks. This is Dallas, TX.
