Hot air blowing in rear with A/C on

Has anyone else experienced this? How do I turn off the hot air blowing from the rear console vent on my 2012 Genesis? I have the temp set for 65 with A/C on and there is cold air blowing from the front vents, but the vent on the rear of the console is blowing hot air. This isn't a big issue until I have guests sitting in the rear on a day when it's 90 degrees outside. I even tried to close the vent but it doesn't seal completely and rear passengers roast. Ideally I'd like to have cool air blowing in the rear, but if I have to I'll remove the vent cover and stuff insulation in the console vent pipe.

There's a temp control on the console attached to the rear vent, it is set to red (heat) move it to blue (cold) and your problem is solved.

Thanks, but I tried that as soon as I found out it was blowing hot air. Switching between RED and BLUE makes no difference.

I hope to steer you in the right direction, but I can solve your specific problem. My Chrysler 300 had a similar issue where most people would get either all hot air, or no hot air from the vents. Turned out to be one of several actuators in the HVAC system. Tha actuator is a simple electric motor that opens/closes a vent door by rotating a gear box.

In my case, owners reported the dealers wanting to remove most of the dash to replace at a cost over $1k. The part cost $30. The fix required moving the dash panel below the glove compartment and replacing the little motor. Kind of tight, but cheap and I fixed the problem myself.

So getting back to your issue. If the front works like it should and the back is blowing hot air, then somewhere in your system an internal flap door isn't working. All the other nonsense about cracked thermostat housing, etc, is nothing more than dealer fibbing. Check other Hyundai or KIA forums for a similar issue and see how they fixed it. Best of luck.

Occasionally my kids will mess with the dials, or bump one with a foot. Happened again the day. After blowing hot air for about 5-10 mins, I noticed it and put the temp control to full cold. Took almost 5 mins after changing the setting for the ductwork to cool down and cold air to come out.

My wife always spins the dial to "hot" when she drags he purse out of the back seat or rear footwell. I always double check it when she grabs her purse. On my 2013 the left side dial is temp and the right side dial controls the vent blocking shutter. On my car when throwing the dial to full cold I notice the temperature change in 10-15 seconds. I live in central California Gold country foothills and it is hot around here. I hate it when I forget to check and can't figure why it is taking so long to cool the cabin!

I have a '12, like you. My basic warranty ends in December after 5 years. If I had this problem, I would have the dealer fix it under the warranty. After December, I have 10 years of further coverage under an extended warranty that cost me $1,295. Life is good.

It takes a while...when you switch the rear to blue (cold) take your auto climate control temperature in the front all the way down to Low (coldest setting possible) It will kick in a few minutes...it is not instantaneous.

Thanks for all the good suggestions and solutions. It ended up being my fault, not the car. The main reason for there being no cold air was that the HVAC air is routed through the front doors to the ducts in the rear and I was changing the rear dial while the doors were open. The doors must be closed completely to make a seal.
