  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I started years ago on manual transmission, and then some years of automatic. Next, enjoyed very much my sports shifting on the Acura TL-S I had for many years. But I am sitting on the fence now. So far after 3K I have used mostly sports shifting. However, it seems I am paying a lot more in gas for it ... I think?

Auto FTW. Let the tranny decide where the power is and get MPG's when you can. I hate ECO mode vehicles. I call it "Fall on Face" mode or FoF for short

I drove exclusively manual for my first 30 years of driving, but then started commuting on the circular parking lot known as the DC beltway. Two hours a day of shifting between first and second gear convinced me that automatic had become a necessity, so I switched at that time - for the past 20 years I have driven only automatic. Now, alas, I can no longer operate a clutch due to a leg problem, so it looks like I will be an automatic guy for however many driving years I have left. But at least the Genesis has allowed me to get back to RWD!

Automatic 95% of the time. It's far better in auto mode than manual mode, I think. I turned the Eco off because it's a dummy light I got tired of looking at. Having it on didn't influence my driving behavior anyway.

On our Nissan Forums, we tested whether we got better 1/4mi times in auto or sport shift mode (tiptronic) and we found that 100% of the time we pulled better times in straight auto

Auto mode about 90% of the time. Sport when going down hill and hate riding the brakes like all the dummies ahead of me. In my Pontiac G8, Sport mode was a true spport mode, i.e. it would stay in gear until you shifted, unlike the Genney.

Eco is a joke. It's just a dummy light. Does nothing at all on the car except let you know if you are driving in an economical manner, which 90% of the time I'm sure most of us are not. :) On some of the other Hyundais, it actually does something.

I drive in Automatic all this of the time when cruising and accelerating, but always down shift when slowing down or stopping. Breaks last 100k plus mile that way:D

I was thinking about starting to do this myself but was wondering whether this might cause any issues with the transmission down the road. I guess not .... :)

Brakes are lots less expensive than drivetrains (I know, 100k warranty, blah, blah).

That said, I love a traditional manual, but I hate the "sport" mode on modern automatics. Automatic about 100% of the time.

I thought the "ECO" mode in the 2012 Genesis was not a reprogramming of transmission, but only advising when high vacuum/good mileage conditions were present. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

I can't stand the way the transmission downshifts for passing in the auto mode. It takes too long and often reaches down to too low a gearing. Found it better for me to sport shift into a lower gear before I commence passing.

Yes you are correct. However, in the Sonita, it does change the shift points and the fuel economy. So it's kind of a misnomer as it does work in some form or fashion in some models and is nothing more than a idiot light in others. ;)

Same thing with my Optima. OM says disable to ECO mode by pressing the ECO button, which will deliver more sporty experience, or something like that. So far my wife is averaging almost 27 MPG, which is about 3 more MPG than the 3.3L Sonata it replaced.
