In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. How do you reset the steering wheel range of motion?

My steering wheel was perfectly fine then I raised the height about an inch or so and turned the car off with out moving it back. Now the steering wheel only goes down 3/4 of the way. I like it to move all they way down. This happened once before and the dealer reset it.

How can I reset this?
I tried the trick of holding the joystick down for 10 seconds and then in for 10 seconds but that did nothing. I think thats more for the steering wheel not moving all the way up.

How can I fix this?

Thanks Joe

I found this thread and tried the fix but as stated in my post it didn't work. Could it be that it's to fix the upward range of motion? How can I reset so the steering wheel will come all the way down? It used to go low enough to block the speedo but not anymore...it's really annoying. I like my steering wheel low.

Thanks
Joe

I have the same problem with my 2010. I fixed the "upper range" problem with the aforementioned fix some time ago, but now my wheel doesn't go down far enough and the "fix" doesn't appear to work on the "down range" problem. I like mine almost in my lap.

make sure you do the reset after car has been off for 20 min. or so and do not turn on anything when you get in the car and hold the knob up first for 10 sec then release, then hold knob down for 10 sec. then release (wheel should go all the way down then) Last do the hold in and hold out reset. I found that if I tried the reset soon after the car was turned off that the reset would not work.

Anybody try moving the control UP and OUT for those steering wheels that sit too high? Run the control all the way in the direction the steering wheel DOES properly reach the true stops/limits... then hold the switch in that position for an additional 10 seconds. That's the basic "fix" technique.

The theory behind this fix:
* How does the steering wheel controller "know" what the tilt current & telescope positions are? Assumption answer: that the controller thinks it knows the current position and has some sort of logic process to compute "tilt is changing xxx per second as tilt/telescope knob is held" when you run the knob so it continually re-computes what it thinks is the steering wheel position.

* As long as this computed position matches the actual position the system works... but if the computed position is ever out of sync with the actual position the controller will falsely limit how much the steering wheel can move. Basically, when the computed position says "steering wheel is at the travel limit" it'll kill motor power, incorrectly limiting the steering wheel position.

* By moving the steering wheel all the way to a PHYSICAL stop (not one based on the controller - one based on the actual mechanical parts of the tilt & telescope mechanisms) the steering wheel stops moving BUT the controller doesn't "know" that... and will continue updating its internal counter until the computed position ALSO reaches the stop if you continue to push the tilt/telescope knob. This is what should be happening during the 10 second portion of the "fix" procedure.

Yep, our Mecedes E500 has a similar problem with the sunroof and the fix is the same kind of proceedure when the roof will not close.

Pay so I tried this fix several times and it's not working. Is there something I'm missing in order to reset the downward motion of the steering wheel.
Even using the joystick the steering wheel will not go as low as it used to and it's driving me nuts.....

It may be time for the trip to the dealer for the updated control module and you can show them that its not working correctly so the dealer should not balk at doing the install of the new module.

Do you think it's the module? I mentioned this to them once before and they did something so it works again but now back to limited motion.
Only happens after I adjust the height upward while driving then when I arrive at my location I turn the car off with out bringing it back down. Then when I get back in the car it doesn't go all the way down.

I asked them about the service bulletin and they said it didn't apply to my car which is a 2011 4.6 with tech package

Just take the the thing in and let them fix it. Then have them show you what to do if you mess it up again.
