How do you store/play music?

I'm thinking of buying a 2015 with either the tech or ultimate package. One of the attractions of newer cars is the ability to store music in the internal system or have a direct input from an iPod or phone. In my older car I have to use a cassette adaptor, which sucks.

I gather that the ultimate has 30gig of internal storage. Do you ultimate owners just load your music into the car?

For owners of the other models, is it easy to just store and play through your phone either through USB or aux input? I have an old iphone 32g that I could use as an iPod to store and play music in the car.

I put about 100 songs a time on a USB drive to load into the Jukebox. I have nearly 1300 songs in the Jukebox. Just put the USB drive in the socket and hit menu. There is an option to copy to the Jukeox.

Off the top of my head (for Ultimate) you have:
HD Radio
XM
USB - just leaving the flash drive in
Device via USB
Device via bluetooth -- if you already have your phone paired for telematics it will automatically appear as a source when you go to "media"
Save to Jukebox
Auxiliary input
CD (single)
DVD

Might have missed one or two, but I think that's about it.

I think the jukebox does have a limit on the resolution of the songs (320kbps?), so if you have or need to play higher quality songs, the iPod may be best. Not sure about USB music playback resolution.

I don't use the jukebox at all. For me, its much easier to use thumb drives. I don't even bother using my ipod any more.

No worries about charging or wires with the thumb drive.

Yep. I actually prefer the DIS controller in the center console on the ultimate. I think it was one of the best decisions to make a system that's both touch and controller run, you can use it however you want and people tend to have fairly strong opinions between the two.

If the songs are only on your iPod there are some third party programs that can recognize the iPod as if it is itself a flash drive and allow you to copy the files. I haven't used anything like that in a while, so I don't know if Apple has done something to block the functionality. There used to be half a dozen different programs. The last time I checked iTunes will not allow you to pull songs back off the iPod.

Of course, if the songs are already on your computer's iTunes that would be the easiest way to just copy and paste them onto the flash drive.

italia brain's right as usual, so Frog iTunes! There are, however, still third party programs that let you get around Job's control issues. My favorite is called iFunbox which works with my PC running Windows 7. Plug your iPhone (and, hopefully iPod - haven't check this) into PC, download and run iFunbox (it's free I think) and go to tab on left iFunbox classic I believe and you can kinda get drop and drag functionality for songs and/or pics.

Then pull them onto a thumb/flash/usb drive plug it in and play or download to jukebox and same.

It may require a conversion to copy to a flash drive and then to jukebox. iTunes codes the songs in its own format which isn't compatible with some devices. I will look into this some more on my end. Thanks for the response and suggestions.

So the original question was "How do you store/play music?" I have really not experimented with storing but I know when I plug in my iphone to charge, everything comes up on the infotainment system. You will see the album cover, you can chose to search albums, artists, titles. All the controls are in your face and very easy to use. Extremely well executed and is as thorough as it gets.

Now if you tell me I can store music and get the same interface going as when my Iphone is plugged in. I'm all ears.

To answer the above post about an extensive CD collection. You need to get up to date and transfer this to a computer via whatever program you choose. I highly recommend itunes however there are many options out there but you do want to keep simplicity/compatibility in mind and this is where itunes shines. Once you have your collection in digital format everything else is quite easy and you will now have several options.

I had a really nice Bang & Olufsen wall mounted system I purchased years ago which was my pride and joy for almost 20 years. Well the CD player died so I had an estimate done which came back with almost the price I initially paid for the entire unit. It was outdated, had problems with recorded CD's and was quite limited with all of todays digital options out there. At the end of the day I decided to get with the times and go digital which proved to be the best decision I ever made. I now have a multi room sonos system which I can control entirely on any computer, smart phone or ipad or almost any electronic device. Once you have tasted digital you will never go back. My 300+ CD collection is in boxes stored in the attic which will go the way of the dinosaur. Actually the CD is following the same road as the 8 track and cassette not to mention the all mighty vinyl. I even question why they still have them in cars sometimes and the car makers are starting to think the same way. Midnight is right on with his suggestion to transfer your CD's to a digital form. iTunes is one preferred way, which can also allow you to have access anywhere when using iTunes Match, which stores the songs (virtually) in the cloud. Once in iTunes, you can burn new CD's, move to other devices or stream from other devices.

If you have a CD/DVD player in your computer you'll get more flexibility just copying your music files into a directory. Itunes limits you to using Apple playback products. I have an Ipod but I don't use it in the Genesis as thumb drives are so convenient since they have no wires and no charging requirements. The system is also easy to use.

Once the files are copied into a directory and sub dirs they can then be copied to thumb drives, SD cards, Android phones, Windows phones, etc.
