  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How do you take off the engine cover?

The function it serves is to 'prep' us for the day when engines WILL be sealed and we won't be able to do even the simplest of maintenance jobs.

If electric or fuel cell motors become commonplace there will be no need to do any maintenance, nor will the average Joe be able to do any. That day has already come for me. I have been working on gasoline engines my whole life (not professionally) and I just got tired of skinned knuckles, the need for special tools and the contortions one must go through to work on modern vehicles. Leave it to the young studs. All it takes is money and I can get more of that if needed. :)

However, the cover does have a function------------it quiet downs some of the engine noise.

I think that's the main reason. Between when the car is off and idling in park, there's around a ~15 db difference in sound for my V6 inside the cabin. To give you an idea, between idling in park and driving on a not so smooth highway there's also about a ~15 db increase. Between having no music on and having songs at volume 10, it's about 10-15 db again...So we probably don't think about it much, but the engine is very loud.

I imagine if they had nothing to block sound over the engine and on the firewall, that noise level would be a lot higher. :)

Differences in non GDI and GDI 3.8 covers

Does anybody know if the cover for the 3.8 GDI (12'-14') will fit the non 3.8 GDI (09'-11') engine? If anybody has a picture showing the bottom side of both covers with mounting locations that would be great.

The function it serves is to 'prep' us for the day when engines WILL be sealed and we won't be able to do even the simplest of maintenance jobs. Make the engines look sealed up and so forth, so users will be accustomed to seeing it that way. Then rather quietly the day comes when new cars have those covers bolted down for good and the only way to 'get service' is to take it to a shop...yep, that day's a coming.
That's where I break out the saw if necessary

Holy thread necropsy, Batman!

I'm assuming you mean the black and silver plastic engine cover that has the H and says V6 on it. You just pull it up, you don't have to be gingerly with it. It's completely cosmetic, and serves zero function, other than to hide the engine. Some of the newer car engine bays look ridiculous.

Do they think people are going to serve food on it?
WRONG!

================================================================================================= I have a 2014 3.8 liter (V-6) Genesis. I need access to add a refrigerant connection to the back suction service port. My cover does not appear to be identical to the one in the photo. Will mine simply lift up as you say ?
