How do you take off the engine cover?

I am getting ready to do an oil change soon and was curious as to how the engine cover comes off?

Didn't want to just pull on it until I know exactly how it comes off?

Also if the cover was left off would that increase the amount of engine noise coming through to the cabin?

Any negatives to leaving it off?

I'm assuming you mean the black and silver plastic engine cover that has the H and says V6 on it. You just pull it up, you don't have to be gingerly with it. It's completely cosmetic, and serves zero function, other than to hide the engine. Some of the newer car engine bays look ridiculous.

I am rocking sans cover in my other car, but it's older. The cover on the V6 hides the Lambda that some feel is visually unappealing, one writer called it, "
Darth Vader without his helmet"

Yep pull directly up @ the corners and it should pop off.

The function it serves is to 'prep' us for the day when engines WILL be sealed and we won't be able to do even the simplest of maintenance jobs. Make the engines look sealed up and so forth, so users will be accustomed to seeing it that way. Then rather quietly the day comes when new cars have those covers bolted down for good and the only way to 'get service' is to take it to a shop...yep, that day's a coming.

It depends on which model year you have. On the 2009-2011 V6, there is some functionality in the cover. I believe starting in 2012 with the direct injection engines, that may not be true.

I can tell that by comparing the prices of the covers. The 2009-2011 V6 cover is about $450, and about $100 less for the 2012-2014 V6 cover. I believe there is some sound baffling involved, but don't exactly recall (there have been other posts about this subject in this forum).

I am not sure which model year you have, other than you posted in the Generation 1 2009-2014 section.

Also, if you have a 2009-2011 V6, you must remove the cover to access the oil filter on top of the engine (near firewall). It is not hard to take off the cover, and put it back on, so I would leave it on.

While it's off, you can wash it to make it look brand new.

Pulled it off the day I go the car. That thing weighs a lot with all that foam and plastic, so now I'm faster! It's now sitting on a shelf in my garage.

Take two hands and pull on the side towards the firewall side of the cover, than do the same for the front of the engine cover. A good solid tug does the trick. I love that rubber grommets were used for these covers. Saves a bunch of time on removing the cover vs. my Outback cover or my Sonata cover. To secure back on, a solid push works.

Yes, but you don't need to pull it to change oil.

However, the cover does have a function------------it quiet downs some of the engine noise.
