How long should a smart key battery last?

I am not paranoid. The Walmart I bought them at only had a 4-pack, so I replaced the batteries in both smart keys (I rotate them every 6 months or so). I put the other 2 in my glove box and I am sure they will last a long time while not in use.

I don't know about the ones sold at Ikea or eBay, but the Energizer ones are guaranteed to last 10 years before first use.

Correction, Energizer only guarantees these will last 8 years in storage. So I think it is a good idea to throw a spare battery in the glove compartment.

Make sure that these are made in USA.....most of Ebay Energizers are made in CHINA

I keep one in the center console as well, but I don't think they would last as long due to temperature swings.

Lithium batt's not only have a shelf life up to ten years - they function well at low temps.

I use 'em in outdoor devices like weather sensors and trail cams for that reason.

Agreed. I use the spare when it's time to replace the fob battery and then replace it with another spare.

Well, this thread was very timely indeed!!

I was at the dealership yesterday for an oil change and when I got back in my car to leave a “low battery” warning appeared in the dashboard. So I went back inside and they showed me how to easily open the key fob (you have to remove the manual key and use a small screwdriver) and advised that a new CR2032 battery could be had for the low, low price of Cad $11.99. I said no thank you very much as I had a spare one at home. Anyway, today I walked by my local dollar store and found out they had a Maxell 5-pack for Cad $9.99 (they’re lithium and are made in Japan), so I got one and will be changing the other battery in my wife’s key fob.

To answer the original question, though, the battery lasted a tad over 25 months (the fob is never in proximity of the vehicle when it is parked).

Why not just change it annually? It's pretty important in maintaining the serene grace of Genesis ownership.
