How many 2012 owners have complained about the transmission to Hyundai?

I just got my car back last night. I spoke with the tech an he said the update is to address shift patterns. I could only drive it in rush hour traffic but the most noticeable part was my average gas mileage started to increase immediately. I was able to try put my foot on it a few times and it does seem smoother and faster on the downshift. But it also seemed like I didn't have the same passing power!! I didn't get to really drive it yet but those are my initial thoughts post update.

I assure you it's not due to the mechanical design of the Gensis. It's the ECU programmed to favor best fuel economy that's the problem... well, to some of us.

There definitely have been complaints about slow downshifts on the new Hyundai 8-spd, some of it may be attributed to the ECU programming, but it's also attributable to the nature of transmissions w/ ever higher no. of gearing.

A tidbit - Toyota didn't go w/ their 8 spd in the new Lexus GS b/c Toyota felt that the 8 spd took too much time searching and wanted the quicker, more precise shifting that their 6spd provided.

I'm pretty sure it's not that tranny that needs time to search but the ECU to figure out exactly what needs to happen. When you hit the pedal it's all guess work.

To me it doesn't seem that complicated. If you're driving a luxury car, 50% should give you 1 or 2 gears depending on total, in a sports car that should get you lowest gear+1. 100% press should always give you lowest gear regardless if it was a sudden stab at the pedal or a gradual push.

Either way...slowness becomes a factor when you go from 8--->3, I guess that could be tranny based. But it could also be the ECU protecting the tranny so it would last the 10 years it was promised to last. After all, costs have to be cut and it's easier to limit shifting speed than to build a stronger tranny (and cheaper too).

I have had my car back for 5 days and the shifting pattern is noticeably different. First off the gas mileage is appreciable better especially in suburban driving. I was getting 15 mpg and am now seeing about 17 mpg on premium gas.

The downshifting is different. It seems the first floor of the accelerator drops the tranny by only one or two gears. If I put it to the floor it drops an additional gear. Previously the tranny seemed to pause, drop down and this hit hard on the gear to take off. It is now much smoother of acceleration. To be honest, I miss the drop down and then hitting hard. I was able to really feel the power of the V8 although it was much more sudden.

The tranny is clearly an issue that Hyundai is paying attention to. My ideal would be that they could use the eco light as a tranny setting. With the eco on it would be more docile and with the eco off they would quicken the response. It is all drive by wire so the tech told me straight up it is a software programming fix and not anything mechanical.

On a side note the tires are way under gripped for this car. It seems I can spin them just on taking off from a stop up a hill on wet pavement. I had the Bridgestone Turanza Serentiy and loved them on my last car which is what I will most likely be replacing them with when the time comes.

Hi NSANOW -

Thank you so much for sharing. Forgive me if you have already stated this - but what is the TSM # of this update?

Thanks,
Newman

It is TSM#00 or 03 I cannot remember. I think it is #03. One was for the ECU update that didn't apply to mine and the other was the TCM update. The links are on this thread in a previous post.

i drove 2012 gennies, and i didn't feel that the tranny was significantly slower to downshift than the 2011 ZF.
the car that shifted very quickly was a 2011 audi S4, which i believe has the dual clutch setup. again, it was a very sporty car, and hence a quick shifting (and not so smooth shifting) tranny is more appropriate.
Yes, the two cars serve very different purpose.

Though if I was the Hyundai president I would equip the Gensis R-Spec 5.0 with 8-speed DSG or SMG, for ultimate race performance.

And make the following speed ranges for the gears:

1st: 0-35 mph
2nd: 35- 60 mph
3rd: 60- 90 mph
4th: 90- 110 mph
5th: 110- 130 mph
6th: 130- 145 mph
7th: 145- 160 mph (top speed electronically limited at 160)
8th: 160- 210 mph (fuel saving gear)

With this gearing, with this much of hp, it will destroy the IS-F from roll. Hyundai can do this, but they made this car to keep the old folks happy and keep the fuel economy up unfortunately.

looks like you don't really know gearing too well...I can engage 8th gear at like 50mph if not less.

If you can get into 8th at 160mph, you would be getting like 5mpg...the sillyness of the numbers is too obvious.

I think what you really meant was the redline shifting points not the overall shifting range.

Either way, I for one enjoy the fuel economy that a Genny can provide along with brutal acceleration when needed (in manual mode anyways).

I was referring to maximum allowed speeds for each gears at max allowed rpm's, aka max shift points. You sound new to the gear ratios...

This again, tells me you don't have one single clue about gear ratios. As you can see in my famous proposed specs, the 8th gear in this case is tall enough to reach 210 mph at say 6400 rpm. It would probably get you better than 5 mpg at 160 mph @ 8th gear. In contrast, some BMW 5 series at top gear at 160 (with top speed limiter disabled) you would be getting worse MPG than my proposed spec for Hyundai. You want to save fuel, why would you want to travel at 160 mph anyway? Recommendation, set to 55 mph at top gear. That'll save you more gas. You are really new.:welcome:

What part of my numbers are silly exactly? the 160 mph part? the 210 mph part? If you think that's high number that once again, tells me you don't know about gearing.

You definitely don't understand gearing...

;)

From January Car & Driver: "To keep the gear count rising, Hyundai has conmfirmed that the world's first 10-speed automatic will arrive in the next-generation (probably 2015 model year) Equus and Genesis models."

You can't get brutal acceleration with your 3.8 V6 Genny in the highway. You don't understand gearing? :welcome:

Maybe you don't understand the Genesis, considering you've probably never driven one? :D

How does a "speed range" equate to a "maximum allowed speed"? And shouldn't the ranges overlap? The shift points relate to RPMs, no?

As I have a Master's degree in engineering, I think I might be able to "understand gearing" if you deigned to explain it to me.... or anyone else here, for that matter.

Can anyone confirm that there is an update to the transmission as described?

no update for the 3.8, came back from the dealer today.

I have found the following TSBs for the 2012 Genesis. I have no idea which, if any, address the transmission issue for the 3.8 but they also address other issues so I intend to discuss them with my dealer at the next service: 11-1-036 ( two ECM software upgrades), 11-1-054 (transmission software update and control module), 11-AT-015 (speed sensor for autotrans), 11-AT-017 (autotrans solenoids and and sensor).

Please let me know if any of those apply to the 3.8. I had my 2012 3.8 in for an oil change last week and the tech did not mention any updates, but some techs don't look at TSB's if you don't ask them to.

Fortunately - Hyundai will have paddle shifters with the new 10 speed transmission coming out. ( at least, that is what some journalists are saying )

I would love paddle shifters with a transmission up to about a 6 speed, but I just have this mental image of an old timey telegraph operator when I think of how many times you'll be hitting the paddles with a 10 speed! "Oh, corner coming..." tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap. :p

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
it wouldn't hurt for mutli taps to trop several gears at a time, I wouldn't mind that.

Car brought back from dealer with no TSB's mentioned...it will be going back again as issue was not resolved, I will mention TSBs.
