If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How many 2012 owners have complained about the transmission to Hyundai?

I just had my 2012 4.6 in and they did the transmission TSB. With my dealer you have to specifically request the TSB updates.

I asked them to update the map and they said that there was no map update. I just called the map company and discovered that V4 is now available! So I guess I am headed back to the dealer soon.

map updates can be made on request? is it DVD based or HDD?

HDD. Your map can be updated at the dealer when a new version is released. It is not on the website yet (at least for 2012), but V.4 has been released.

I went to service yesterday and gave the tech the TSB numbers that are out. None are for the software update for the 3.8 to improve the downshift speed. Given that there has been a software update for the V8 2 months ago, this is very disappointing.

CarAndDriver has a review on the 8 speed charger using a ZF tranny, they saw 2 second down shifts.

Might be the nature of the beast since it's so early in the product cycle.

The tranny shifts beautifully once in manual mode though, just drop it down to the correct gear prior to tearing the road up :)

Any news on this? Not a fan of either V8 with the 8-speed. Up shifts are gorgeous. But downshifts are painfully slow and the only thing after my test drive steering me to other models. I don't recall the 6-speed behaving this way. Has anyone with either V8 had any luck with an update? I drove a 2012 Acura TL with the new 6-speed auto and downshifting was brilliant... Instantaneous.

Fingers crossed Hyundai will sharpen this puppy up soon!

Genny is much faster than TL even with a V6, all you gotta do is shift down for your self, up is auto.

I think Genny is a better bang for buck than TL.

btw, both my previous cars were Acuras, 06 TL and 09 RL so I know a thing or two about them.

Other than bragging rights at the pub, what advantages does the 8 speed have over a good 6 speed??

A good automatic transmission design usually has one on-coming clutch pack and one off-going clutch pack. The more gears in the transmission (leading to jumping down a number of gears in a power downshift), the more clutch packs that may need to be released and be engaged. That could take more time.

The computer should be able to make up its mind as to what gear its going to in a nanosecond or two.

Considering how quick upshifts and manual downshifts are, this is software in need of refinement.

Those are 1 gear change at a time. I suspect a hard downshift from 8th may well take the transmission down to 3rd or 4th. There will be a lot more stuff going on in the tranny if that is the case.

I just picked up an R-Spec a few days ago and while the upshifts are silky smooth, some downshifts are choppy. Hopefully HMA is working on a software update.

I almost had an accident this weekend and do not know if I should blame it on the transmission or that I switched to regular gasoline from premium.

I have had the software update to the transmission and it has helped somewhat but not enough for me to wish I had not bought this car. The downshifting is a little bit better, but this 8 speed transmission is crap and I certainly will not ever buy another car north of 6 speed.

The accident almost happened when I was coming off of the freeway. Coming to a light at the end of the ramp and was red. I stopped and looked left to turn right. A car was coming but I felt I had enough room to pull out in front. Pressed the gas to go and was not going, car lagged for a full two seconds. Gas pressed further and further as I moved to the right to avoid getting hit by the car. Finally after a couple of seconds the transmission caught a gear and I was off. I am pretty sure it was the trans not catching a gear as the tach was racing upward.

Hyundai has plans to move to a ten speed transmission. Good luck with that!

So the moral of this story, do not drive except as an old lady would or you may find yourself getting in an accident cause your car does not respond the way it should.

I hate this car! If you are lucky enough to own a BMW and have become used to the way it drives, you will not be satisfied with this car. Keep your Bimmer and save your pennies and get another Bimmer.

I'm sorry you are experiencing this. However, I have had a completely different experience with my R-Spec and with the BMW I sold. With my 2012 Genesis, upshifts are fast and smooth, downshifts are very fast, catching multiple lower gears, as the situation requires. My only complaint is the transmission's manual mode, and how slow it responds. If you are a former BMW owner who has had a great experience, you should probably go back if it isn't financially prohibitive to get out of your current car. Not all of us have had good experience with the latest generation BMWs, especially as it relates to reliability, software issues, driveability characteristics and some fundamental design choices BMW has made.

It's starting to sound like this 8-speed needed more time in the oven. I suspect they felt the Genesis SEDAN demographic was such that rapid-fire downshifting could wait a bit. They have had the past year to get get this 8-speed ready for the Genesis COUPE where those owners wouldn't' tolerate a lazy auto shifter. I'm thinking there will be further software updates down the road.

I still have a few weeks before making a final decision but I noticed this behavior on all three test drives (4.6, 5.0, r-spec) and that "delay" is a deal breaker for me unless there's some confirmation from Hyundai they are aware of it and working on a solution.

I think your problem stems from lack of adjustibility. If you know you need immediate power, you shift for your self and never get surprised.

dump it into 2nd or 3rd. We know the tranny is slow to go from 8th to 2nd, we all know that. There's no reason to get hit just because you're too lazy to shift to manual.

Anytime I want to drive more than leisurely I just dump it into manual and shift for my self, this way there is no wait for downshifting.

If you have the car, learn to enjoy it, if you have the option of giving it back do that. If you're stuck with it...you really might as well enjoy it and that means sometimes shifting for your self.

I respectfully disagree that the real solution is manually shifting from 8 to 2 or 3. When you need to accelerate quickly in any car with an automatic transmission, mashing the gas pedal should always result in an instantaneous downshift and thrust. That's how every other car in the world works. The point he is making is that in an emergency or "little time to respond" situation, mashing the gas pedal results in a delay and eventual grab and thrust. In other words, the computer that controls shifting is unable to determine what the driver is calling for quick enough. Yes, a TEMPORARY solution would be to manually shift. But there are a number of cars on the road now with 8-speed transmissions and while it is true, the more gears the more complicated the programming gets, the delay the OP is describing needs to be addressed ASAP. In fact, if it is easily repeated, I would suggest Hyundai send a powertrain engineer out to drive this car.

I've driven them all at this point and at the moment, the best-reacting 7+ speed automatics out there now are the Benz 7-speed and the 8-speed ZF (Chrysler/BMW/Audi applications). I wonder why Hyundai didn't just use the ZF unit vs. going at it alone?

the new Chrysler 300 uses ZF 8 speed and according to Car and Driver they can count to 2 before a full down shift occurs.

As far as all cars reacting instantly to WOT, I respectuflly disagree. My previous car was a 5 speed Acura RL (2009, 3.7L 300hp), notice 3 less cogs in the tranny. Full Press of the pedal resulted in lowest gear +1, the only way to get the lowest was to let off the gas completely and than mash it as quickly as possible.

Also, I don't think the issue is that Hyundai can't make the gears change faster, it's that they choose to do it slower to maintain that 100k warranty stability.

Yesterday is the 1st time thew lag scared me. Pulling left around a slow cart on the freeway, I saw a car coming up quicker than I expected. Slam the gas pedal down and I'm still stitting there at the same speed until the tranny catches and propels me like a bat out of hell. But I was really nervous for 2 seconds.

The idea of switching to manual and then downshifting in that situation is not reality based. I did not expect that car to be coming that fast. I misjudged and a truly great car helps me to overcome my mistakes. It does not make me take a circuitous, time consuming, and dangerous work around.

With my previous car, an 2011 Acura TL SH-AWD, everythig was instaneous. It was immediately responsive, nimble, and extremely secure....no body roll or wavering of any type.

Time to accept the Genny for what it is. It has limitations that can't be argued or rationalized away. And it has attributes that can't be matched at its price point.

It's a cruiser. A fast cruiser, yes, but not a car I'd ever be comfortable tossing around curves like a BMW, Acura or Infinity.

Hey Glashub -

Glad to hear you made it out of that situation unscathed! I think that this statement you made hits the nail squarely on the head:

Time to accept the Genny for what it is. It has limitations that can't be argued or rationalized away. And it has attributes that can't be matched at its price point.

That said, I do think that you can toss the Gene around in corners today when in manual mode. And if the transmission issues were addressed I dare say it would give even the vaunted German cars a good run for their money.

Cheers,
Newman
