Hey everyone. This is not technically "new" information to this forum, but I thought it deserved its own thread instead of being buried in another thread. You can get Carplay via a software update if you have the 8" screen, but those of us with the 9.2" screen (Ultimate package) can't get it like that. Anyway, I'll cut to the chase.

You can get Carplay and Android Auto via a mod involving the head unit. You need to buy a product called "HK Carplay 10W" (or "HK Carplay2 10W") from car4play.kr. It's a little pricey and shipping to the US isn't cheap. With everything, it cost me $437 (including shipping and the LVDS extension cable that they said American Genesis models need). A few others on this forum have also successfully installed it. Basically, KPLAY (one of the interface boxes I was sent) takes the video feed that would normally go to the screen and runs its own software, allowing you to switch between their software (which runs Carplay) and the stock infotainment. Switching is easy too - you only need to briefly hold the hang-up-call button on the steering wheel. Just FYI, it's not natively integrated, so steering wheel buttons won't otherwise interact with Carplay. But I've found Siri to be sufficient, beyond just touching the screen.

Other than that, the whole system runs really well. I've had it for about a week and I haven't run into any issues. You can do wireless or wired Carplay and the same with Android Auto (but you need the newer version if you want it wireless). You can also cast your screen to watch Youtube or whatever you want in the car. But I would advise being smart and not watching anything when you're driving (please).

The one tricky thing about it is installation. They recommend using a professional shop, which I did, but I'm not sure I'd recommend that unless you really prefer not to do it yourself. When installing it, my audio shop ran into an issue getting the touch screen to work. The seller may (or may not) have sent the wrong part, but they were able to get it working after contacting tech support, which is in Korea. The time difference makes contacting them a little difficult. This touch-thing was actually a big issue and turned this into a nearly week-long job because they had no idea what was causing the issue. I asked and it may have to do with the instruction manual provided. It wasn't super clear on what to do and I think the DIS switch instructions may have been wrong. Not 100% on this because I wasn't there and this may be specific to the part I was sent. Also, there's not a lot of information on Youtube or anywhere else about this product, so they were on their own except for the manual and contacting the seller. Either way, they got it working after a week in the shop and the whole thing cost me $750 (their rate is $75/hr, for reference). Not cheap. They did a great job hiding wires and the 2 boxes, but I kinda wish I just did it myself, even though I've never installed something like this.

If you're installing it yourself, here's some reference material:

I'm also attaching some pics of my setup so you can see what it looks like after installation.

In conclusion, KPLAY is a good product. I'm not a fan of the stock navigation, so having Carplay alleviates one of the biggest downsides of the Genesis. If you plan to install it, just know what you're getting into. Hope everyone finds this helpful.

Thanks for providing these photos, they look great. Did the shop hide the 2 Kplay boxes in the dash? Are you using the Apple Carplay via wireless or plugging in with the USB?

Yes, the 2 boxes are in the dash. They are totally hidden. Only thing is there's an AUX cord that goes from the port back into the dash and a USB cord coming from the glove box. But that's pretty subtle. As for the wireless situation, you can do both wired and wireless. I tend to do wireless. If you want wired, simply plug it into the USB port coming out of the glove box. I think it doesn't charge very well, so when I want to charge, I plug into the car's built in USB port. The caveat with that is you need to change your audio output to USB (iPod) because your phone recognizes the car and switches audio channels. It can be a little finnicky because you need to let the audio connect wirelessly before doing this. If you don't, then your phone doesn't give audio out and you need to unplug, then replug it. Simple fix and I'm pretty sure that's an iPhone bug.

Thanks for posting! I stumbled across that same video on YouTube last week and was considering this, having struck out with the Hyundai nav update sim card. The price is down to $310 now for Car4play and my local Best Buy says they can install it for $100 - $200. So it looks like a good deal to me. I was just looking to see if anyone here had any info before pulling the trigger on the purchase. :-)

If you can hold them to that price, then that could be worth it. Just keep in mind that they almost certainly have never dealt with this piece of equipment before. The shop I went to is pretty experienced, but they still ran into some troubles with it. Might I ask why the software update didn't work? You linked the 10b version, which I believe is for the 8" screen. Having a natively integrated Carplay is always going to be better than aftermarket.

Update: After using it for some time, I ran into a (fixable) problem. Basically, if you are using wireless carplay and plug in your phone, it will send audio through the USB connection. Since KPLAY works through AUX, you lose audio. The obvious solution here is to switch audio channels, but this is several button presses away normally. This was driving me nuts until I remembered that you can map the MODE button to different audio channels. I mapped mine to AUX and iPod. Now if I plug in my phone, I can simply toggle my audio channel from the steering wheel. You might wonder why I didn't just plug into the USB from KPLAY. I tried this, but it charges extremely slowly, to the point of barely being useful. So that's why I still charge with the car's USB port.

TL;DR - Map the MODE button to AUX and iPod. This allows you toggle audio channels easily when charging (or unplugging) your phone.

Fortunately, we have the advantage of YouTube. There's an extensive Youtube video that details the snarls and pitfalls involved and the installer says he will reference it if needed.
I have no idea why the Hyundai update didn't work, but it failed twice; once when I downloaded the files manually and transferred them to an SD card and again when I bought the package from Hyundai's subcontractor. When they sold me the Hyundai SD card, they said there was a 50/50 chance it wouldn't work, but didn't elaborate.

Update. Car4Play no longer has the original KPlay Hyundai/Kia K kit for apple car play. They've replaced it with the K2 version and are offering to ship that instead, but they're asking questions about cables for which I don't have answers. A little help would be appreciated. Here's what they sent Wednesday.
" Before i ship your order, i need to check one thing.
we have 2 types of HK carplay 10 products. 10W and 10B
difference thing is, LVDS color. You ordered HK Carplay 10B product, So this product have black color lvds cable.
(please check your car's LVDS cable)"

And to clarify the question, they sent this today.

I have no idea what the correct answer is. Does anyone know the correct answer to this question for a 2016 Genesis sedan?

I found this confusing as well... One of the reasons that I haven't done this yet. I'd probably just buy the other cable as well to avoid any hassles...

Thanks. It sounds like they're basically asking me to remove the OEM monitor and tell them what kind of cable it has before they ship the kit. Since I plan to have someone else handle the installation, for me this is a chicken & egg scenario. I'd have to pay someone to pull the screen and tell me what cable to use so I can order the kit, then pay again to have it installed.
I''m thinking it's not worth the hassle and money.

I too would like Apple Carplay/Android Auto but with a 2015 Ultimate I am out of luck. The Car4Play kit sounds interesting but very confusing and installation sounds like a potential nightmare. The electronics in this car especially the audio head unit are already iffy and prone to act up. I just wonder what taking things apart in the dash could do to the already delicate electronics..

I only have 44k mileage with a HPP platinum warranty good to 100k/3 more years so I don't want to do any modifications. If the head unit did act up after installing the Car4Play kit I am sure Hyundai would deny the warranty due to the modification. But even if I didn't have a warranty I would be very hesitant to do the mod.

However I just came across a far better solution and cheaper solution. It's available on Amazon and it has a 7 inch screen and can be mounted on your dash with a suction cup. It can be connected to your cigarette lighter for power and a 3.5mm aux port for audio.

In addition to running Apple CarPlay and Android Auto the unit can mirror what's on your phone screen.

Here is a link to a review of the unit.
Add Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to Any Vehicle

Here is a link to the unit on Amazon. There is a $100 coupon bringing the $369 cost down to $269. The $100 coupon may just be a Presidents Day sale only available for a limited time so if you want to buy with the $100 discount you should act quickly

It's not perfect of course but I'm willing to try it and with Amazon's 30 day return policy what do you have to lose. Another advantage of this unit is that it's portable so can be used in other cars you may have that don't have Apple or Android. My other car does have Android Auto but I can see a use for this when I rent cars as many rentals don't have Apple or Android.

I don't think the HU nor the steering control module are covered by the HPP.

The platinum HPP plan does cover the steering control module and basically covers any mechanical breakdown other than items listed in the section "Exclusions From Coverage". I have attached the complete HPP warranty to this message as it may help others who are considering purchasing the warranty.

Last year the radio (head unit) went out and was replaced under the warranty. The head unit retails for $3,800 or it did last year so just that one incident covered the $1,800 I paid for the warranty and then some. That's one reason I am afraid to do any mods on the car now.

This is the 9/17 Revision. Is that for Genesis G80?

I bought the warranty for my 3.8 2015 Ultimate in November 2019 and the warranty was still the 9/17 revision so it was valid for all models at least up to 11/19. There may be a newer revision now but if there are any changes I would assume they would just be cosmetic as the warranty would still cover all mechanical issues.

I think the 10b is for the 8" screen and the 10w is for the 9.2". As for the LVDS extension cable, I ordered it as it is necessary for most US models. The shop used it when they installed it into my car. Also, re: the youtube thing, the videos are helpful, but they are not comprehensive. My shop had a lot of trouble even using the few videos on youtube about this. They had to call support in Korea, which was difficult because of the time zone barrier. Also, they said the manuals were not super informative. So just be careful. They had my car for a week before getting it all figured out. It's worthwhile in my opinion, even with that considered.

Yeah... I downloaded both of the pdf's. They were super unclear!

Because of the obfuscation and the fact that I would need input form the installer before ordering the kit, I canceled my order. Car4play is processing a refund. Once that goes through, I'll be stuck back where I started, owing a great car with an outdated and frustrating navigation system.

The Aphqua unit arrived yesterday from Amazon. I was surprised to see that I didn't need to mount it as it fit exactly over the 9.2 screen and it was a tight fit meaning it didn't slide off when I was driving around, making turns, etc.

screen.jpg

My initial hesitation about ordering this was I wasn't thrilled about having to mount it on the dash or window as that would look messy. But now that it fits over the 9.2 screen perfectly no need for any mounts.

True there were a couple wires hooking up to the cigarette lighter and USB so not as clean a look as stock, but since the Genesis will never be able to have Apple Carplay or Android Auto this is the best alternative out there unless you want to do a mod, tear apart the dash, etc and possibly risk damaging the electronics.
