If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I'm a ham (aka amateur radio operator). I want to install a 2 meter transceiver in my Genesis with the radio "body" in the trunk with the antenna located on a mount fastened to the trunk lid. The control head will be just forward of the shift knob on a custom bracket mounted into the CD/DVD storage tray. My problem is HOW DO I RUN THE THREE CONTROL CABLES FROM THE TRUNK TO INSIDE THE COCKPIT??

I can't see how to penetrate the front of the trunk space into the back seat area. It does appear that there is a cable run from the battery to the engine compartment but if I was to use that cableway then I have the problem of penetrating the firewall back into the cockpit.

Any ideas or thoughts???
Please respond directly to my email address with any comments.

Sorry I don't have any advice on how to solve your problem, but I would like to say hello to a fellow ham! I'm KB5VMM, nice to meet you. I would like to get a unit in my car too but haven't pursued it much, let me know if you ever get it figured out.

The advice I offer is probably self evident. When i installed a set up in my Murano I followed the rear audio amplifier cable. Sometimes enlarging the holes and at others paralleling the cabling.

Have you removed the rear seat yet. If not First thing I would do. This might make the routing via the side sill covers more evident.

Another route may be to go exterior down thru the trunk floor, maybe next to the battery overflow drain and then well supported and finally up between the front seats directly below the center stowage console.

I would be sure to have a GREAT Ground and full tight shielding of every thing as RF leakage would probably kill the digital sub systems.

Finally be sure your warranty is not going bye bye from this install, (effect on various computer controls etc.)

Good Luck!

Don,

That's the route I may have to take. Of course, doing that would mean putting the car up on jack stands or a lift in order to gain access the underside of the vehicle. I put a vhf/uhf radio and an hf radio in my truck but it's a 4 wheel drive and much taller. Very easy to slide under and run the cabling...

BTW, for the ham above.... my call sign is KE7JA... I live on a ridge above Puget Sound. Just south of Port Townsend about 12 miles. I have a SteppIR 3L for HF plus an inverted V for 75 meters. Plus, several UHF/VHF radios and antennas for local coverage. Active in ARES/RACES and volunteer for Sheriff and Emergency Management.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Go to eBay and search for:

"Car Floor Mount for Yaesu FT-7800 FT-8800R FT-8900R"

The unit has a flexible shaft that runs down to a bracket that mounts under the bolt on the left side of the passenger seat. Hence you can install it without drilling any holes in the car, just loosen the bolt under the passenger seat. I mounted the microphone hangar on the support shaft using a hose clamp.

I used cable ties to hold the wires to the shaft, then I ran them under the passenger seat, under the carpets in the back, and out through a hole I drilled in the plastic plate behind the rear arm rest (completely hidden with the arm rest up).

Can you tell me how you managed to run the cable under the rear seat? Granted, I haven't looked very hard at it but it appears to not have any clearance between the bottom of the seat and the floor pan. Also, with the "air bag" in the seat, I've been hesitant to mess with the seat.

Presently, I've got the cables running through the opening in the plastic behind the arm rest but that's, hopefully, very temporary.

BTW, my email address is ke7ja@cablespeed.com if you want to reply directly.

thanks,

I've been reading this thread with great interest, as I too am a ham (call WA0URU) and would like to put my dual-band rig in my Genesis. Right now, I'm using my H/T with a temp mount on the window.

I called the local Hyundai dealer and asked the Service Department how to remove the seat... should have done that months ago. He said to pull up on the front of the seat bottom and it would pop loose. He wasn't sure if it was bolted in the back or not but I found two bolts that are accessed through the space between the bottom and rear half's of the seat.

I removed the seat bottom and, after drilling a 3/4" hole through the access to the trunk, ran the control and speaker leads through the hole and down in back of the pull down arm rest. I taped the wires to the floor pan under the bottom of the seat. So far, the wires are still exposed from the seat bottom and across to the back of the front passenger seat. The control head for the radio is mounted on a custom fitted "plug" that I put in the small storage bin above the cigarette lighter.

The body of the radio is mounted on the left of the spare tire under the trunk floor. The antenna is on the left side of the trunk lid.

Got any pics of your set up?

jammeter,
Would you mind sharing some more detail on how to remove the rear seat?
I'm having difficulty picturing where the bolts are located.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Dan

The bolts are located at the top rear of the bottom seat. They're visible and accessible by prying open the gap between the seat bottom and the seat back. It's a metric bolt, of course, and it was very tight. To break it loose you'll have to apply a great deal of force. Remove both bolts. You could remove the bolts before pulling up the front of the seat. That would give you a "bit" more room to reach in there to the bolt heads.

When re-installing the seat be careful that you don't drop the bolts as you place them back into the bolt holes. No harm if you do but you'll have to remove the seat again to retrieve them.

Speaking as an old military operator (ditty chaser - a lost art), do you ever use CW on your rig at home?

Hanging my head in shame..... I'm sorry to say I'm a "no code Extra"... I'm "tone deaf" and never learned CW. Barely learned French in High School. I think the teacher took pity on me and gave me "C's" just because I showed up in class.

I would like to learn it, though.... have bought a CW course on CD from ARRL but found that you need to do more than look at the CD on my desk. You actually have to study and practice... oh, well when some gives me a roundtuit I'll try it.

Any updates from anyone installing a vhf/uhf radio in their Genesis?

I have looked at it but really have not explored it to much yet, but would appreciate any input from those that have.

Thanks,
Chris
