  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How turn off engine and leave A/V on?

Wow - getting kinda complex . . .

I do believe I have narrowed down my USB problem to the presence of the USB stick itself. Seems that whenever the (energized) system senses it, the AV turns on.

I tried several variables, and it seems that as long as the stick is in place, the AV turns itself on whether you want it or not.

FYI, I tried:

1. Car and AV running, turned to XM, turned off AV, unplugged USB stick, then stopped car; result: AV stayed off at startup (no USB stick in slot).

2. Unplugged USB before starting car, then started car - AV stayed off (was off before shutdown). Then inserted stick: AV autostarted. (BTW, it defaults to the root audio file present on the stick, in this scenario.)

3. Engine running whole time, USB plugged in, then turned off AV (had to manually turn it off, of course!) - then, engine still running, unplugged the USB and reinserted it - and, bingo, the AV turns itself on. Again, root audio file played)

4. While engine is running, turn off AV, turn off car. Then unplug USB, wait a few seconds, then reinsert USB. Wait a few hours. Upon returning later in day, when starting the car, the AV autostarts (and plays the audio file that was being used when I originally turned off the AV, regardless of file location on the stick. So apparently there is some type of "memory" set on the stick or in the AV system).

I think I will discuss this with the dealer service department. It's really annoying to have to manipulate the stick to keep AV from coming on.

mikec: I can't explain the schizophrenic response of your stereo system from one day to the next, but it seems to now be acting like the rest of ours' always did. ???

CenTexan: I can confirm that my Genesis behaves in the same manner as yours with regards to the USB stick's presence vs. not. I imagine they engineered it like this for a reason. I wonder if the settings can be tweaked... let us know what your service manager says.

After sitting all night and all day today the stereo stayed OFF when I tested it this evening. I noticed the banner at the top of the display said "AV OFF" after I got past the nag screen... and the stereo/AV system stayed OFF. USB stick still plugged in - hasn't been removed for weeks.

Turned the stereo on... shut off the car, waited just a few seconds, turned car ON again. Stereo was ON this time which I expected - the "ran into 7-11" mode. Note too the LCD display in the instrument panel that tracks "Elapsed Time" doesn't reset to zero each time the car is shut off... it "holds" time if the car is shut off only a short while (the 7-11 thing again) and goes to zero only if the vehicle is OFF for a longer time period. I believe the AV system has similar logic... though each seems to have different ideas of "short while."

We'll see what it does in the morning.

The AV on-off thing seems about as predictable/consistent as a typical teenager.

Since this thread has strayed a little off the original topic, I'm going to post a new thread titled: Does your AV always auto-on when USB stick is plugged in?

Maybe we'll find some other folks with similar experiences - and maybe a fix! :)

See you all there.

Great forum. I was stymied by how to simply turn the radio on with the key off and I inferred it from above. For those of you that didn't learn what I just learned via reading or testing, WITH FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, but key fob with you, the start engine switch is a toggle between ACC/ON/OFF in that order. As long as you get in the car and don't touch the brake, regardless of how you opened the door - the first time you hit the start key, the ACC functions work (seat adjust, steering wheel adjust, AV on). The next time you hit the start stop, the ON functions work - ACC stuff plus all chimes, Climate Control, etc. The next time you hit the start stop, all goes off. Very nice car. This is my 4th day of ownership. Off to get the windows tinted.

Page 5 - 8 of the manual explains what you have discovered. Also, the on/off button for the AV system cycles through several settings.
