If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. How well does an iPhone charge through the USB used for Apple CarPlay?

Just put a 3.3T Advanced on hold at the dealer. I figured it wasn't it worth it (for me) to pay the extra for the Elite Package, especially since you have to plug in your phone via the USB to get CarPlay to work anyway, and I assumed the phone would charge via that USB. But is that effective? I've heard that if you're actually using the CarPlay (to listen to a podcast, for example), that it's not going to charge much. If that's true, maybe the Elite upgrade would be worth it . . .

Note...both iOS and Android varients need to be wired in all trims...to get the “auto” versions of each.

Wireless charging is there in upper trims...but just for charging.

I have an advanced and just plug in to use CarPlay. Seems to charge it a little more than it uses, works fine for me

If the phone is off it charges very well, if you keep the screen on then it maintains the current charge.

Typically my phone is around 20% when I leave work, commute is an 45-60 minutes and it’s at 100% when I get home.

That good. Way more power than the typical 1A charger that comes with the iPhone. It's probably charging at above 1A. I'm guessing 1.2A to 1.8A or so!

I have and App called Amperes that will test the incoming charge connection and report the amp rate, problem is that it takes 10-15 minutes to run the test.

if I remember I will run it sometime this week and report back @ what rate the USB in the car is charging at.

That would be awesome. There a device that's also a coupler that has a small LCD screen that shows you what is coming out of any USB port as well.

Hmm. Need to find that.

I ordered a different one. Might be useful in figuring out why my stupid iPad won’t charge. Always says not charging, though technically it is but very slow, took it o apple store and they can’t figure it out and want to charge me $550 to repair it for a 1st gen pro they only offer $250 on for trade.

I’ve tried 2 new chargers including a 18w 5v 3.2 amp quick charger. The app reports the iPad is only getting 521mA at 2.6 watts. But my XS max reports 3100mA @ 12w.

Have you tried a different lightning cable as well?
All these meters do the same thing. Some show you more precise measurements and other just round off. In the end of the day, they all help figuring out if something is broken!

Yeah I’ve tried different cables and chargers. All work fine on the XS max and my former 8 plus. It’s the iPad that has an issue, it is nearly 3 years old, and apple has had an ongoing issue with batteries since the 6plus. I suspect it is the device not the cables or chargers.

So I ran an errand today. Here are the results:

iPhone XS max. 4.71 volts 1442 mAmp
iPhone 6s. 5.71 volts. 1993 mAmp

I will point out the app does indicate different charge levels will result in different results. The XS was at 65%. The 6s was at 30%. The 6s gets very hot on any charger plus is showing only 60% of battery capacity is remaining, where the XS is brand new, only had it for 3 weeks.

Will be interesting to see if the hard wired multimeter reports similar.

That's great info.

Just to clarify, it does that, even if you're using the phone via CarPlay (playing music or a podcast, for example), as long as the screen isn't on? That's definitely a lot better than my current cigarette lighter car charger.

Yeah the screen sucks power. If the screen is off and your just streaming music the charge rate is very good.

I’ve had it where I’ve left the screen on for my song data while using the vehicle gps and the phone doesn’t really charge just maintains the current level. While technically charging it is using as much power as it is pulling.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. From what you all seem to be saying, it wouldn't seem to make sense for me to upgrade to the Elite package just for the wireless charging pad.

^ I have an iPhone 8 Plus. I have BT on...but screen is off.

When not steaming or talking on it...it charges quite quickly.

If gone from 60 to 100% in perhaps 20 minutes.
