  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

HUD calibration after windshield replacement.?

As for calibration, I did a search and it does appear that some other automakers do in fact have a calibration procedure (saw something about it on BMW and Volvo forums) tho I doubt that Genesis dealers have any idea what they're doing and will involve their preferred glass shop to advise them.
Every car that has LKAS or similar has a procedure for calibration. In the US, it was done by Genesis dealers but now companies like Safelite have the tools to do it. They did it in my daughter's Honda when her glass was replaced.

As for costing the same, I don't see any incentive to charge you less.

I'm talking HUD calibration. LKAS calibration was completed and works perfectly. Tested it out already.

Aftermarket has always cost less than OEM. Have never heard of it costing the same or more. First time experiencing that right now.

Was told by a glass guy on a local car forum that Hyundai and Kia glass availability took a huge hit during Covid and has not recovered.

The OEM glass is junk anyway tho. Tiny pebble hits it, chips and then immediately runs across the windshield? That is crap. Same experience as the other user in this forum in the other thread I posted in about this glass saga. What really concerns me is the sunroof.

I believe this is most commonly called ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), from what I have seen. This can be done with aftermarket or OEM windshield. Just about every car mfr has ADAS calibration procedures that can be run to account for not only minor windshield curvature variance, but vehicle suspension ride height and rake angle. Our '21 G70's ADAS works just fine with the Pilkington glass. In fact, quite often, with just a windshield change, the old ADAS calibration might just work fine without having to be recalibrated. Some folks are gonna cry foul on this suggestion, but that's just the way it works out. ADAS typically has enough tolerances built in to account for a variety of influences that might affect its windshield-mounted forward looking camera's "aim". Things like vehicle loading, tire pressure/size, etc. So the system is usually fairly robust.

Yep. This is likely the biggest influence on whether OEM glass gets used, regardless of whether the insurance company approves not not. When I was looking to replace our G70's windshield, I called the dealer part counter asking for price quote on OEM glass. Guy said he's call back... never did. When I talked to the guy that eventually did the replacement job, I asked him to give me a quote on OEM glass. He tried to get a quote from Genesis dealer... same no call back. I get the sense dealer parts counters knew it was unobtainium and just plain didn't care to response to inquiries.

I don't have enough personal data to know exactly where the Genesis OEM glass sits on the quality scale. I can only say that I have no problem going with Pilkington glass for my replacement, as they supply OEM glass to mfrs like Jaguar and Range Rover, amongst others.

You paid it. Everyone pays it. Since they got it faster than Genesis, some may even pay a premium. Did they at least offer you a squirt of KY?

A little. Invoice shows they did knock $200 off which was nice.

Just got my windshield done!!! Finally! No more big crack right in my line of sight! 2021 G80 Prestige

Glass appears aftermarket. Pilkington FW5862. Which is interesting considering I had many people say aftermarket doesn’t exist. Fit was excellent and car seemed quiet and no whistles for the speeds I was at on the way home.

HUD is only slightly blurry. Not really a huge bother as everything is still very legible. But I think I will try and get it to focus better. I guess I have to involve the dealer with that? There’s no setting for it that I have found.

Did you get this resolved?

I know this is an old thread, but you can definitely calibrate the HUD on the G70. Had my windshield replaced during the winter with aftermarket.

I assumed the slight blurriness was due to the glass not sitting perfectly like it would from factory. The more expensive tools (Autel, etc), have a calibration option where you can move around the HUD display with quite a few options. Was able to get it near perfect.

Update:

After 11 months and around 1800km with my new windshield, it got rocked near the bottom centre, right above the defrost vent, in September. That's right, only 1800km is what I had driven in between windshield changes.

The good news is that, this time, it didn't turn into a crack that ran almost immediately like with the OEM glass I had. However, in cold weather, I think it would crack and run because of a harsh delta T across the glass. Still, it was a tiny pebble that caused this again.

I had insurance this time tho.

I have had Pilkington glass in the past as OEM glass and it has been high quality. On my prior BMW, with a HUD, I did get a Safelite replacement non OEM glass and it worked perfectly. I had no complaints. But that was a few years ago and I don't recall who was the maker of the replacement glass.

A week after I got my car I got a chip on the passenger side. I had Safelite do a repair (with ADAS and HUD I would rather not replace the original glass if I don't have to) and it has worked fine in the year and a half since.
