  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone. I saw a prior post about this topic but I never seemed to read about a resolution and I think im experiencing the same thing. When the car is in auto. climate; it sounds like a jet is taking off. As soon as I turn the auto climate off, the vehicles winds down and goes to a normal quiet idle sound.

What I wanted to know is if everyone experienced this; or is this behavior not typical?

If you're talking about the engine cooling fan, completely normal.

Assuming you're referring to the HVAC fan and not the engine fan the way it works when on Auto is it will run at a high speed to cool the car off as rapidly as possible and then slow to maintain the temp.
You can always slow the fan speed manually by pushing the small fan icon on the control panel which is what I do once the car cools down.
Also since there is only one fan for both the front and rear you should make sure the rear AC settings are not set to too low a temp. otherwise the fan will stay on high much longer. I make sure the rear AC is off when no one is back there.

So most of what I’m picking up is a noisy engine cooling fan and that’s normal. However why would that engine cooling fan become quiet when the “auto” function is turned off on the climate control?

I read one comment that the car is trying to get the vehicle to a temp as fast as possible but i have a 50 mile commute and this occurs after the car and climate have been set on for 50 mins. In addition it happens even when the climate outside is similar to the temp set inside.

I mean a little bit louder than idle is expected but this sounds very loud. Kind of like when you hear a box truck engine accelerate. I’ve had a couple people standing outside when parking my car ask me why it’s so loud.

I’ve had multiple large vehicle SUVs with this function and frankly have never heard anything this loud. It doesn’t seem like something is broken; just really loud as a whole.

I took the suggestion of turning off the rear climate. I’ll see how this goes after my commute to work tomorrow.

As a side note; I’ve also noticed my windshield wiper motors are loud too haha. I never noticed stuff like this in my other vehicles.

On your commute, any place you can pull over, pop the hood, and take a look? The fan is electric. On a hot tay, it can even run after the car is shut down.
Could be your fan is defective and louder than usual. I never hear mine when in the car.

...
The engine cooling fan cools the engine, and the AC evaporator. (The fan only runs when the car is going below a certain speed.)
There is a pressure sensor on the high pressure side line of the AC system. The fan will run as fast as needed to keep the pressure below a certain amount. With the climate control on, the valve in the compressor opens and the compressor pumps refrigerant to cool the evaporator. This causes high pressure at the condenser. The fan runs to cool the condenser and reduce the pressure.

i appreciate everyones input and explanations to help educate me. The only unknown here is measuring how loud mine is vs anyone elses. Would anyone mind measuring with a cellphone db meter what level their vehicle reaches with auto climate on after they return from a drive and park the vehicle with the engine on and placing the phone on the front grill emblem and the microphones facing up? I will measure mine tomorrow and hopefully someone in here will have something to compare with.

The easiest solution would be to have it checked out at the dealership for peace of mind...Mine is loud outside also... but not inside!

Agree. On outside of car with AC compressor running sounds like a jet taking off. Turn off the compressor and loud fan disappears. Quiet inside no matter what.
Normal albeit slightly annoying vehicle trait.

This vehicle has literally the loudest cooling fans I've ever encountered. The good news is that the sound insulation is superb and you really can't notice the noise from the interior.

Our '22 Audi S5 Cabriolet is just as loud and sometimes runs for quite a while after shutting down the engine. Like the GV80 you can't hear it in the cabin.

When the cooling fan on my Ford 7.3L gas V8 kicks in to high you look around for low flying aircraft.

Interestingly enough, Audi fits different radiators and cooling fans depending on the climate where the vehicle is being delivered. You could have a totally different cooling package for a car being sent to Arizona versus Maine, for example. I'm sure other automakers probably do something like this, too.

It was neat to see them working with different parts all on the same assembly line when I did a tour in Neckarsulm.

Yes, and Audi also has separate blowers for the front and back. This is one of the few things I don't like about the GV80

one of the first things my wife noticed thinking something was wrong…….odd perhaps but normal for this car.

It is most definitely loud, too loud for a "refined" vehicle. I've never had a vehicle where the engine fan runs so loud, even in the winter when engine temps shouldn't be an issue. Many times while cruising for a parking space ppl walking will turn around wondering what fire-breathing dragon is creeping up behind them. Genesis calling this normal is complete BS for a 70k vehicle imo.

Does you fan slow and sutoff or does it run on high all the time?

it appears to be the whole time. I have a 40 mile highway drive to work and when I pull in its still on full blast.

I'm sure it switches off above a certain road speed, but turns back on when you get below that speed.

The fan is supposed to change speed depending on engine need. You may have a switch that is bad. You should take it in and let them know the fan is always at high speed.
