  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hyundai Bluelink shutting down service

Wait does this mean that it will break the remote start feature?

Yes, but if your signature is correct, and you have a '15 Genesis, you are fine.

Speaking on Bluelink. It's so frustrating the way they set up a plan (for my 2015). I went to see what current cost was so I clicked on 1 year plan for "remote" and the"security" options you're forced to buy just to use remote start. Wow, it says total due was $55.00. Heck of a deal I thought. Then of course at checkout it says plan only good until "3-15-22" !? WTF, that is not even close to being a "1 year plan". These BL plans are so damn expensive and frustrating to deal with. Add to that they always have that "promo code#" box at checkout yet they NEVER EVER offer promo codes for BL.

I cancelled my service, its not worth it, I only use google send to car and remote start once every three months.

I did renew for a year but the plan is to trade next year. I would have done better with an aftermarket remote for staring and forget the rest of the features.

Overall, it is too unreliable for the money. I also tried the car finder last week while the car was at the dealer. It showed the last location, a place I visited two months ago, 1100 miles away. Could not refresh.

I am also pretty sure my 2015 Genesis Tech Package uses a 3G modem connected to Verizon (at least in the North East region of the US).

This article from 2014 mentions that starting with the 2015 Hyundai Models, including the Genesis, it will be using Verizon's 3G service.

Based another article from The Verge, it looks like Verizon doesn't have any predefined date to shut 3G service down when it originally pushed the date back from 2019, to then the end of 2020. My Bluelink has been working great throughout 2021 so hoping to get a few more years out of it since I gave the car to my father who uses it frequently during the winter and the summer.
This. Yes, I believe that they used verizon 3g until like 2016 or 2017, when they switched to verizon lte. I have a 2015 and I'm so upset they didn't just put an lte modem in because I lose my services Jan 1, 2023, when verizon is set to shut off cdma.

I'm sure they'd upgrade the system...as long as you pay for everything.

It is possible that Hyundai may still shut down Bluelink connected services for the 2015 and 2016 Genesis even if Verizon continues 3G service for another year. It is also possible that letters were sent out to Genesis owners by mistake. Regardless, recieving the letter indicates that they expect to cancel your account on December 31 and may already have the automatic cancellation scheduled. You might want to contact BlueLink for confirmation.

I just received my email notifying me this morning that my 2018 G80 connected services will be terminated by Dec 31st. 2022 due to shutting down 3G.

I wonder why they can't just install a 4G unit in the car if owners choose to do that? I'm sure it is probably available as the newer models probably came with 4G I would imagine.

2018?!?!?! Jesus, I thought I was upset about my 2015. Hyundai has to have some kind of workaround for this. I can't believe that anyone inside Hyundai feels like it's appropriate for a 3-4 MY old car to lose a feature like that, especially for their budding luxury brand.

I would think so too, but they haven't even teased the possibility of a replacement module, even at customer expense. Maybe they have found that not enough people continue the service after the first three years for it to be worth while to them?

The 3G loss is not a fault of Hyundai. Maybe they can come up with a plug in module that will work on the Blackberry network. They could send you the update on a floppy disk so you can do the upgrade.

I have no idea how the modem is integrated in the system and if it is possible to change out a module . We want the latest technology but old hardware is a problem. Maybe some sort of third party will come along with something.

I think they're about to get an avalanche of feedback that they're wrong. The only feature that I use is the remote start, but still, when the alternative is a $1000 remote start system, bluelink becomes a steal.... maybe they can make a firmware change where bluelink can communicate via the existing wifi system in the car. At least this would allow users to still remote start their cars wherever they have wifi connectivity. This all just seems so unbelievably short-sighted (which is standard for most car companies) for a company that has always seemed to be fairly forward thinking.

Putting a 3g modem in a car manufactured in 2017 / 2018 is absolutely Hyundai's fault, especially when you consider that the first commercially available 4g network in the US came online in 2010.

Love the floppy disk, got a box of them.

5.25, or 3.5?

Thank you. I was unaware of the timing so even though car designs are finalized well before production time, 4G should have been in 2015 and newer.

Over the years at work we did things related to the auto industry and projects were for models 4 years ahead.

Yeah, I've seen a few of your other posts that mentioned that you worked in an automotive adjacent field. I can forgive a 4 year dev cycle. That makes sense, especially for a component that needs to have a 10 year lifespan. Cutting edge doesn't work in that situation. This isn't that. This reeks of Hyundai just not wanting to spend the extra few nickels on a newer modem. This platform carried through to 2020, I wonder if any of the 19's or 20's are affected?!?

2019 G80 Sport 3.3t is affected, I got the email today.
