  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hyundai Bluelink shutting down service

Still not sure if my 2020 G70 is affected, but for cars only 2 or 3 years old, if affected, Genesis just devalued a bunch of cars by not having an upgradable system to keep functions that came with the car usable as designed. They would have known at least in 2019 that in 2022 3G was going away.
That's a good point. I don't know much about GM's OnStar and other similar services by other manufacturers. Have they had phase outs of their wireless services? Knowing the answer to that question may help or add to the current frustration

I just did a quick search and found that Lexus Enform is also shutting down this year.

Its an older thread but it appears that it is also related to the 2g/3g phases outs that are occurring across the cellular industry.

This is unfortunate and is probably related to how vehicles integrate their infotainment systems. A cellular component like in this case should be a standalone device in the car with the ability to upgrade as external services change. For cars that are only 3 or so years old to lose a feature that is very relied upon is not a good look for the industry. But looks like this problem runs across the industry.

My 2018 GMC Sierra has OnStar and just got an over the air software update to prepare for the 3G changes. OnStar/GM has been preparing for this since the 2016 models. A few of my neighbors have Lincolns. One with a 2017 Lincoln got a notice that their car had a 3G modem, but that Lincoln could upgrade it for about $500. And my 3-year-old Genesis with less than 6,000 miles on it will just lose a feature because of poor design/planning. Guess what manufacturer's cars I won't be buying in the future?

They, being the auto manufacturers, knew this day was coming. The cell providers warned them YEARS ago. Now that 5G is finally deploying, it puts a serious strain cell towers and the airwaves having so many different technologies running all at the same time.
If auto manufacturers were serious about future proofing their vehicles services, they'd find a way to tap into tethered cellphones.

I’ll humbly mention post #58 again.

How would that help with remote start? You'd have a buy a cell phone and a phone plan just to leave that phone in the car all the time.

That's good news because I read that OnStar is going away for "business reasons" but who knows. Sounds like Lincoln is among those handling it best by designing their vehicles such that the cellular component can be upgraded. Seems like common sense to me.

Apparently it's a RAMPANT issue, so I doubt Hyundai gives a shit

Good article thanks for sharing. Yes this is an industry wide issue. And they probably dont care. But with a little design thought, many would have been willing to pay for an upgrade

4G was a thing even in 2015 - couldn't have cost THAT much for a little future proofing... especially considering how Hyundai likes to tout their 100K warranty. Certainly, the car would last that long.

I should clarify. I meant using a SIM card used in a cell phone

2018?!?!?! Jesus, I thought I was upset about my 2015. Hyundai has to have some kind of workaround for this. I can't believe that anyone inside Hyundai feels like it's appropriate for a 3-4 MY old car to lose a feature like that, especially for their budding luxury brand.
Interesting. My 2018 G90 uses LTE, and I know this because it says LTE on the infotainment system. Interestingly, I believe I read somewhere the 2017 G90 used 3G. G80s up to 2019 Stupidly still used 3g. G70s were not listed so I would assume they used LTE.

Done. Just emailed them. Everyone who owns a genesis or hyundai that is affected needs to email them, and if you know anyone who owns an affected vehicle, have them shoot them an email as well. Hopefully, if they get enough feedback, they'll consider something.

you were much nicer than I was, lol

Good email. that and a couple of other things are affecting my decision to purchase a 2016 Genesis AWD 3.8 with all options and 24k miles on it. I am a terrible decision maker when it comes to big purchases. I have a 2012 Genesis and would like to pull the trigger.

BlueLink Ending Dec 31 for these Genesis vehicles:

Genesis 2014, 2015, 2016; G80/2017, 2018, 2019; G90/2017. I contacted Bluelink to see if there will be any tech update, equipment upgrade or work-around. Nothing from them yet.
