  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hyundai Dependability 2008 J.D Power Study

That's good to know.. Dependability is very important - especially when it comes to luxury cars - ESPECIALLY if you don't have the greatest service! So Hyundai still needs to work on this. But being above the norm is encouraging...

A couple of interesting anomolies: check out how low Kia is relative to Hyundai. And there's quite a gap between BMW and Mini, too. Perhaps there are sample size issues in one or both cases (Kia & Mini)?

From a domestic perspective, it's nice to see Cadillac and Buick in the top tier, with Lincoln and Ford (!?!) not too far behind, either.

I don't know which dealers you guys have been going to, but when I was living in Seattle last year the two Hyundai service depts I went to were excellent, and so is Glassman Hyundai in Metro Detroit (where I now reside). All three dealers gave free courtesy checks and car washes to boot.

As for the J.D. Power Study, it was based on 2005 models thus there's no doubt in my mind that Hyundai will continue to make gains on the report once newer models (such as the Genesis) are studied.

Keep in mind two things:

1. Problem rates can vary a lot within brands. For car buyers, rather than people simply interested in the scores, I see very little value in brand level scores. Instead, car buyers should look for a model score. But J.D. Power doesn't publicly release these.

2. This survey lets everything count as a problem. As a result, the top five problems include wind noise, brake noise, pulling to one side, and excessive window fogginess. The last three would not even count on the survey I conduct at TrueDelta.com, as the first two generally call for maintenance or replacement of wear items, not repairs per se. And the foggy windows? That one has me baffled. I don't think it's ever been reported on my survey, and I doubt it's something that calls for a repair.

I'm hoping to have a repair rate score for the Genesis soon, but this will depend on how many owners sign up and participate. The August results do include one 2009, so a quick result is possible.
