  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Being that we're following the top-tier Hyundai Equus luxury sedan so closely, I figured we'd open a forum specifically for discussions. Personally, I'm very excited about this new vehicle. I have a feeling it'll spawn a Lexus-like luxury division for Hyundai...

Selfishly speaking, I hope they don't bring it over here for a while. I want my Gen to be the top o' the line at least until my lease is up.:p

Don't worry. It'll be awhile before the Equus gets here...

If I had to guess, I'd say they'll bring the Equus over in late 2010/2011 as a 2011/2012 model once the market has turned around and the Genesis sedan has had a refresh. I'm not sure how I feel about the name they're planning for North America (e.g. Genesis Prestige). It sounds a bit contrived, but I guess it makes sense if they're eventually planning on creating a separate luxury brand under the name of Genesis.

Speaking of which, I think the next-gen Azera, Veracruz, Gen Coupe, Gen Sedan and Equus/Gen Prestige would make a great initial lineup for their luxury division, if they decide to persue one. It would also leave a healthy amount of product for Hyundai (e.g. Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Tiburon, Tucson, Entourage, Santa Fe as well as they're upcoming Venza competitor and whatever else they have in the pipeline).

Can you please elaborate on "Prestige"? It sounds like you're saying the Hyundai Equus will be the Genesis "Prestige" here.. If that's the case, I'm guessing "the" Genesis will also get a new name.. Or is it the other way around? Prestige Equus and Prestige Genesis?

After doing some searching and reading, it appears this car may come here as the "Genesis Prestige", like Jwaters mentioned.. I can only believe that "Genesis" will become a brand name - but then what would the "Genesis" Coupe and Sedan be called? Maybe it'll simply get numbers like everything else does lately.. Genesis S380, Genesis S460, Genesis C200, Genesis C380... And then the Genesis Prestige... I agree that if a Genesis brand were to come about, the Veracruz should be a part of it.. The Azera would work as a Lexus ES competitor...

Genesis A-Class or Genesis Azera
Genesis S-Class or S380 / S460
Genesis C-Class or C200 / X380
Genesis Prestige

Exactly. I can only surmise that they are planning on creating a separate luxury brand under the name of Genesis and that is why they are trying to build as much name recognition in the U.S. as possible by naming all of their new RWD cars "Genesis". The only reason the Equus is still called the Equus in Korea is because it actually has a bit of history/name recognition there.

For some reason I'm reminded a bit of Acura in the early 90's. The Legend name had more recognition with the general public than Acura, which is party of the reason they foolishly killed it off. It just goes to show you what a good name can do. The Genesis is a great name IMO.

*If* they do launch a separate luxury brand under the name of Genesis I would fully-expect each model sold under that brand to adopt similar alphanumeric designations as the rest of the competition, just like you've suggested.

I, for one, would certainly love it if the brand name were "Genesis". I wouldn't have to start a new site for the luxury brand! It would already be up and running right here - and we'd just add a few new categories and forums to the mix. Besides that, it IS an excellent name. "Genesis". I would really make sense - especially since we already have two separate vehicles under the name - though Infiniti also does this with the G coupe and sedan.

I REALLY HOPE we don't have a "Hyundai Genesis Prestige" on our hands in a few years...

I agree, they need to do a spin off to a luxury brand name and call it Genesis. The only idea I don't like is the alphanumeric coding to identify models. Names have a more 'identifiable' image where people can relate to whereas alphanumeric causes confusion to the general buying population.

The only question then would be - how to rename the Genesis Coupe and Sedan? Of course, we couldn't call it a Genesis Genesis.. Right? I'm not sure a complete rename would be a good idea.. So what would be the best decision?

Well, if future versions are S360, L460, etc., I would suggest calling the Sedan and Coupe just that; The Sedan and Coupe. No reason to alter the nomenclature! :D

That idea has merit but that would be confusing when the Genesis Sedan is selling next to the Genesis Prestige, which is also a Genesis "sedan" - which is why "S460" would seem better to me.. Whatever they decide, I'm sure it'll work.

I haven't posted in a while. In looking at the pictures of the Equos it really looks like a premium luxury upscale sedan. I'd have to imagine it will start in the upper $40k price range. It really seems like Hyundai is trying to gradually become an upscale car brand with the Genesis, Veracruz, and Equos. Will they keep non-luxury cars like Elantra and Entourage? My folks bought a Entourage for around $19k and it rides really nice for a mini-van and a loaded Entourage with leather seats is $10k cheaper than a Toyota Sienna, and rides just as nice if not nicer. I think we might buy our first Hyundai in a year.

pics or ban

edit: holy crap just saw the pics in another thread, can you say lexus ls460!

Current Genesis sedan already has alphanumeric trim levels, and they might as well be the model names if a luxury division is spawned off.

The sedans are sold in the Korean domestic market as the Genesis BH330 and the Genesis BH380. There is no mention of the Hyundai brand; that is understood already. The BH's are sold at standard Hyundai showrooms, but do get dedicated sales/service staff and extra services.

Of course, there is no Genesis BH460 - the V8 is for export only.

As for the demise of the Azera, that's impossible. In the Korean domestic market and many other markets, the Azera is the fourth generation of the highly successful Grandeur - Grandeur TG to be exact. The XG was the third generation Grandeur. If the Azera dies, it only means that Hyundai will sell the fifth-generation Grandeur under some other name. The Grandeur is just way too popular and too much of a cash cow to kill off - to kill it would be similar to Nissan killing the Altima, or BMW killing the 3-series.
