  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Let me preface this by saying I love my Genesis and to date, the service has been quite good. But I don't know about other dealerships, but mine here in the Northeast pulls serious low rent crap when selling their cars. 60% of the cars on the lot (Genesis included) have a dealer add on sticker (which looks very much like a factory sticker btw) with supposed add-ons like Northeast protection package, full tank of gas, dealer prep, 3M guards etc. that adds up to 3k to the sales price. Hyundai is building great cars. They need to eliminate that garbage from Corporate on down if they want the reputation their cars now deliver. What's it like in your area?

This is not unique to any region or dealer, they all do it in one form or another...

The first thing I do when I sit down with the salesman is to cross off all of that BS from the price. Shame on them if they've already added it to the car....walk away if the response is anything other than "yes sir". ;)

Exactly what Rwlewis just said...

Negotiate that crap out of it immediately. You can press a dealership quite simply by getting up and walking away if it comes down to it. Some dealerships are more crafty than others in making some things not appear as add-ons.

In my case, they automatically rebadge all the Genesis models, so that's included and it's not even listed as a line item on a dealer sticker. I took the general "value" of that into account as well when I negotiated and when it came to horse trading for things, it all worked out.

I agree with you both. I told my sales guy the second he mentioned the inflated price that it was a non starter. Many of us have purchased numerous cars and consider it part of the landscape. My larger point was to Hyundai's reputation in the upscale market, a direction they are clearly headed. Hyundai has chosen NOT to launch a new brand, has a dealer network spawned from crap cars and plagued by poor customer service. It just strikes me as an anchor to the past to promote, or at least tacitly allow these types of practices.

Car dealerships are independent from Hyundai Motor America (and obviously Hyundai Motor in Korea) and dealers can sell their cars (that they purchased from Hyundai) for whatever amount they choose (under or over MSRP). There are anti-trust laws governing this price flexibility, which in the long run benefits the consumer (in the “old” days manufacturers could dictate that products not be sold bellow MSRP).

Unfortunately, Hyundai dealers are accustomed to dealing with customers who are relatively unsophisticated, with many of them buying their first new car, so they do what has worked in the past (a few people will actually pay for those dealer extras). If they play too many games, try another dealer. You can get warranty work done at any dealer, regardless of where you purchased the car.

I totally agree!! The salesmen and add ons can drive you nuts in a minute. Here is a short video we all will relate to about the wild ride that buying a car can induce:

Two weeks ago I went with my uncle to a Toyota dealer to check out a new RAV4. We went there because they showed a reasonable price on their website. He decided he liked it and told the salesman that he'd take it for the internet price. He proceeds to explain that the internet price doesn't include the destination fee, etc, etc. He said, well I'm ready to buy if you give it to me for the advertised price, but I'm not paying the extra stuff. They refused, we walked, and they didn't try and stop us. It was very odd. Moral of the story, you can get BS from all of them.

This is a ploy for you to pay at or near the original sticker price. You can go and brag that you had 3k knocked off the sticker price or there sticker anyway and they end up getting the original sticker price.

 I personally would leave the lot without even speaking to anyone if I saw there sticker on the car. It would put me in a bad mood real quik
