Hyundai Tucson iX Hydrogen Fuel-Cell EV mass production in 2015
![]()
Hyundai's fuel-cell program is kicking into high gear as the company has just unveiled the Tucson iX Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV).
Destined for mass production in 2015, the crossover features a 100-kilowatt fuel cell system that is feed by two hydrogen storage tanks that hold 700 bar. It sends power to a 21 kWh battery which motivates an electric motor that enables the Tucson to travel up to 650 kilometers (404 miles) and hit a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph).
Hyundai has been able to shrink the fuel cell system by 20% while ensuring it can operate at temperatures as low as -25C (-13F). More importantly, the range is 76% greater than the previous Tucson FCEV which is critical as hydrogen refueling stations are few and far between.
