  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I wonder...

Would an engine/transmission from 2012-2014 fit in a 2009-2011 genny (either 3.8 or 4.6/5.0)?

Now I am not considering this but thought about it since the Genesis did not have any major chassis change until 2015 if I am correct.

The 4.6 ran from '09 to '12 and 3.8 to '14. The '09 and '12 4.6 are quite similar under the hood.

So my bet is that the 4.6 and 3.8 should fit just fine.

Yes, but all the engine control computers would also have to be swapped out and maybe fuel pump due to the direct injection engines.

Some of the early V8's in 2012 were the 4.6, but replaced mid-year in 2012 with the 5.0 Direct Gasoline Injection version. I believe that all 2012's, even the 4.6, used a brand new Hyundai 8 speed transmission (but not 100% sure), and 2009-2011 4.6 used the 6-speed ZF transmission.

For the 3.8, I don't it would be easy to swap out a 2009-2011 engine with a 2012+ GDI 3.8 engine. Also, the transmission for the V6 was an Aisin from 2009-2011, and 2012+ used the Hyundai 8-speed transmission.

Even if not swapping out the transmissions, mating them up to the engine could be tricky if the gearing was not set up for that particular engine.

Yes the '12 4.6 has the newer 8 speed tranny.

The door sticker on my 2012 4.6 says the car was built on July 25, 2012, which would seem to indicate that 4.6's were also built late in the 2012 production run.
