Ideas about cause of catastrophic failure of my 5.0 R-spec

I own a 2012 5.0 R-spec. Unfortunately my Genesis suffered a catastrophic failure, not exactly sure what yet. She has to be flatbeded into town. I was driving and suddenly I lost power. A huge and I mean huge plume of white smoke erupted behind my car and I lost complete power. The worst burnt electrical smell I have encountered from a car. Even tow guy asked if car was a manual because of smell. He said he has never smelled such a strong oder ever from a car. It will not hold a charge but I did get her running briefly. Extremely rough running almost like running on only a few cylinders, and lots of white smoke again. Smoke did come out of oil cap area and air intake box also.. Antifreeze isn't mixed into the oil, so not sure what is wrong. Any ideas?

That's a failed head gasket (at least). Sorry for your loss.

If your mechanic is competent and reasonably priced, you may be able to repair the engine for less than the car is worth.

Ouch! How many miles? It can happen. I bought a car like that for $15 and rebuilt the engine. Hope the warranty covers you.

55k miles. Yes especially that year. Dealer said mostly likely motor got low on oil and caused failure. Would have been nice if oil light came on as it just had oil change 1k miles before failure

At 1,000 miles since the change it should not be very low. Or the oil place did not fill properly. Or the oil pump failed.

The 2012s 5.0s can burn some oil, but only 1000 miles later it shouldn't have burned much.

Agreed. I don't know what happened. No indication motor was low. I even check oil level because I knew of 2012 issues

I had a Nissan dealer once leave a 3/4 full five quart jug of oil on my seat after an oil change. I had to explain to the tech that it should have been nearly empty (4 1/2 quarts) if the recommended oil had been filled, and I also had to inform the tech that there were 4 quarts in a gallon. This was on a 3.5 Nissan VQ engine.

When I had my 2015 Genesis 5.0 Sedan I tried giving my business to a local garage for oil changes, trying to keep more money in the community. I noticed after one of my oil changes that my engine was running rougher than usual; more vibrations etc. I was worried that my engine (which had more than 90K miles on it at the time) might have been having some internal problems. The next oil change I took it back to the dealer and the "problem" went away. I can only surmise that the local shop didn't put enough oil into the engine.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, these engines don't show low oil pressure warnings. At least not in my experience. My 12 r spec went from a full synthetic oil change, which I do myself, to a full rod knock within 1k miles. It was 3 quarts low.

When my engine failed, it was without warning. No low oil pressure, no knock sensor faults, no low oil level. Just a slight knock that lead to a full bearing failure on the #4 rod.

I have since replaced the engine in my car, myself. The total labor for the job was about 16 hours, because I had never removed a 5.0 Genesis engine before.

Your car, like most, has a low (really "no") oil pressure light. It does not have any oil level sensor or monitoring!
Some cars, like BMW and Jaguar, do have oil level sensing (they actually don't even have any dipsticks), but Genesis does not.

While that maybe true my I would prefer my Genesis to the 740i it replaced.

When the head gasket goes and water gets into the cylinder, you will eventually get water into the oil. Maybe not much immediately, but since you ran the engine afterwards you will have allowed the water to seep more into the oil. That will destroy your engine.
Did they actually measure an oil loss or just tell you that it was probably for that reason?
Also a remote possibility that the oil drain plug may have not been properly torqued after the change and allowed a slow drain. Had a friend that lost a 5.0 Mustang years ago because of that, but in his case the plug fell out of the pan.

Glad you will have a happy ending. These engines take a lot of oil and I can see the Quickeeeee guy putting in 4 quarts and done. I'm afraid to take my car to one just to save 10 bucks.

Had my oil changed at the local dealer last week. After I got the key from the Asst. Service Mgr, I checked the oil level before starting it up.

Never not check your oil after a change.
