I like this thread - I'm also new to Hyundai and the Genesis, buying a new 2013 about 10 days ago. As mentioned above, they are seriously clearing these things out at about 25% off MSRP.
I came from a 2011 Acura TL AWD Tech with a 6 speed manual. Car was a fast, handled great, reliable, and was on rails in most weather conditions. Only problem - I tossed my back out (for the 3rd time) this past winter and can no longer take the punishing ride or clutch actions. I needed something smoother, auto, and big enough for a family (of 4).
I wasn't looking for anything expensive (mostly used). Things I looked at:
2011 C-Class - Way too small for a family (my 13 year old son is 5'10")
2011 E-Class - Way overpriced for a used
2011 5 Series - A contender, but didn't want to Break My Wallet at this time
2014 VW Passat - I had a 2002 Passat 1.8, and they brought back the 1.8 for 2014. But the new Passat is nothing like the older Passats. No character, personality, etc.
2011 Lexus ES350 - Probably very reliable, but boring, handled lousy, and the interior electronics felt last-gen.
It was an Edmunds review of the 2011 ES350 that pointed me to the Genesis, mentioning it and the
Buick Lacrosse as the price-range competition. I never thought of looking at the Genesis (but do fondly remember the commercials back around 2009 when they first came out).
I first went after the price to see what they're going for (TrueCar is a pretty good resource). My eyes bugged out when I saw the discounts - I could get a new Genesis for what should be the used price of the same car. After researching the feature content and mostly glowing reviews, I was hooked. I then looked at a used 2011 Genesis 4.6, but the added features of the 2012 (and now 2013) convinced me otherwise.
Compared to the TL, the Genesis obviously doesn't handle as well and the seats aren't as hugging. But just about everything else, including the infotainment system, visibility front, side, and rear, comfort, smoothness, etc. is better (for me) than the TL. I am going to miss the AWD come winter, but I'm pretty sure I can manage that (born and raised in the NE). The 0-60 between the two are just about the same. A pretty big thing is the Genesis runs on regular. TL only premium.
The kids much prefer the Genesis to the TL. Rear seat room is bigger, they now have heated seats, and most importantly, the dial for changing songs is a bit closer than before.
I'm hoping to have the reliability and longevity that others here have had. Never thought I'd own a Hyundai, but this car is pretty amazing for the (current) price.
