If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'd be all over the new Genesis but for the fact that there is no AWD option. Living in Canada makes this a priority for me. I've got to think this could be in the future - Hyundai's SUV's obviously have it so it wouldn't be a leap of faith to think the Genesis could get it? Am I smoking crack or not to think AWD would be a hit with customers? I really need a new car and would love it to be a new AWD Genesis. Can anybody tell me when my wish will come true?

Good luck wishing..... There are several discussions about *what if* AWD model. Search and entertain yourself. Chances are it won't happen but who knows if Hyundai would change their mind about it.

I've read articles that state Hyundai will eventually offer AWD, but who knows when that will be.

I'll pass.....It'll add a bunch of weight and more than likely effect the performance of the vehicle in the acceleration and cornering etc and probably suck more fuel.

And cost more:D

I have seen nothing written anywhere about an AWD Genesis. Have only seen mention of a diesel in the works. Maybe you will get lucky and if the demand is there, they will send it to production. You sound like a candidate for the AWD M35.

Your right about that performance statement with AWD.

But for some customers i believe would take the AWD rather than performance.

IMO, i want both, But I'd rather get an AWD genesis.

( still getting one soon though ) lol

I was told AWD is impossible on the current model, but will be offered on the next generation. So 2010 is no go, possibly 2011, most likely 2012.
(From the GM of my dealer.)

Living in Canada makes this a priority for me.

I live in Canada and find that AWD is absolutely not necessary on the Genesis, except maybe if you live on top of a mountain at the end of a mile-long driveway with a 15% grade.

A good set of winter tires and you're good to go.

I agree with Gimli, pmonag. Have you driven a "modern" RWD car in the winter (with high quality snow tires, ESC, etc.)? I put nearly 10,000 miles on my Genesis this winter in all sorts of nasty conditions, and I never had any trouble maintaining control of the car. In fact, I've been driving RWD cars exclusively for nearly 20 years (mostly BMWs) and have no qualms about it whatsoever. Frankly, I'd have more confidence driving my Genesis in a blizzard than my wife's FWD Sante Fe (lower center of gravity, better front/rear balance). Perhaps I'd be dazzled by some amount of handling improvements afforded by AWD, but then there's the handling compromises and added expense and complexity. Don't dismiss a RWD car without giving it a shot. Personally, I think people have been conditioned to assume that RWD is unworkable in winter climates since FWD gained popularity in the 70s/80s. Hell, there really wasn't anything BUT rear-wheel drive previously, and that was before ESC, LSD and numerous improvements in tire technology!

Thanks for the responses guys - Gimli, I had a good chuckle at your comment ;) I don't live on a mountaintop, but do have a steep driveway on my acreage which is problematic for people without AWD/winter tires. I used to own a Mercedes C320 Sport - had winter tires, ESP, etc. and currently have an 02 Audi A4. I must say that there is no comparison - the Audi is heads and shoulders more stable than the MB. I do alot of driving through some pretty crappy conditions and am sold on AWD/winter tires. I'm ready to get something new and the Genesis fits my bill except for AWD. I know the purists swear by RWD but I can't concur(at least not for my driving area). I would sacrifice some level of performance for the enhanced winter performance AWD offers. I really think the Genesis is an outstanding machine - I guess I'll just have to be patient and hope they consider AWD in future. It would make sense, based on the fact that Hyundai has upmarket aspirations, and all their German/Japanese competition offer AWD options. It would at least level the playing field for them and offer their customers a choice. Here's hoping.......

I agree 100%. With good quality snow tires, ESC and the ability to start in second (or 3rd) gear when needed (manual mode), it would take a lot of snow to stop a Genesis. I suppose it does rather depend where you live, but for the number of major winter storms I experience each year I couldn't justify dragging around all that AWD hardware at the expense of gas mileage and performance. I've driven plenty of FWD, AWD and a lot of RWD cars over the past 15 years through the winter months and I much prefer Rear Wheel Drive. FWD & AWD might provide more traction, but you cannot use the gas pedal to assist in your direction of travel as you can with RWD.:D

As stated, I guess it depends on the person and where they live. Case in point - just this past weekend(Victoria Day long weekend in Canada), it snowed in Alberta. What a country! Can you say, Westjet to Palms Springs?

Ouch:eek: It was just 95 degrees in the Twin Cities for a couple of days already this week.:D

If I would want to spend more money cars, I would also besides the Genny, love to have a 2009 Subaru Legacy GT Limited. I talked my brother into buying one when the new model came for 2005. Hot car! He's got the 5 speed manual and power to the AWD system is 50/50 with that transmission choice vs. the auto.

Given the new Obama fuel mileage targets (or accelerated dates for old targets if you want to look at it that way) I am not sure you will ever see an AWD Genesis. Be lucky to see the Genesis at all in another 5-10 years from now unless it has a hybrid engine.

I would love to see Hyundai bring out a 2.5 liter Direct injected turbo diesel. Volvo has this in Europe and Volvo's makes about 205hp and nearly 400 ft.lbs of torque. The engine delivers about 40 mpg in the current Volvo S80 and the S80 is a few hundred pounds heavier than the Genesis. Hyundai should offer something similar for us here in the states and with AWD. Can you imagine a Genesis with AWD and that much power and getting 40+ mpg? Pure heaven. (I love modern diesels).
President Obama....start your diesel.

Just a minor note on this thread. Hyundai asked me to do a satisfaction survey over the phone a couple months back. One of the questions they asked was if I'd pay a $2000 premium for AWD. I said yes.

So, they *have* been thinking about it. Whether or not it'll happen is another story.

Well the next generation Genesis Coupe is reportedly going to have one, cant see why the Genesis SEDAN wont.

Where did you see that the Genesis Coupe is reportedly getting AWD? I looked on the coupe forum and couldn't see anything about it - can you provide a link please? If this is true, it encourages me that it might find its way into the sedan. Now I'm really getting excited... !!!

I saw this today just surfing around. It is an old review where there is a meniton of AWD in the next generation Genesis. Maybe this is where the poster got it from.

Uhh, that hasn't stopped BMW from announcing that the 7 Series will get AWD (or Hyundai from going ahead w/ the Equus).

Reportedly, the new i40 (Sonata) will get a 2.2L R-diesel unit with an estimated output of 200 horsepower.

For those who can't wait or don't want to wait for an AWD Genesis (which, if it comes, won't be 'til the next gen in about 4-5 years), another option would be the Kia VG sedan which supposedly will be offered w/ a Haldex AWD system.
