  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone done this?

Any issues?

Would i be charged duty because it is manufactured in Korea?

Yes you will be charged both taxes, AC tax, luxury tax, tire recycling tax and any other tax you would normally pay if you would purchase it in Canada. Warranty may be a problem and then again if you buy a new one the US dealer may not sell to Canadians. You will need to have the DRL put on to be legal. I went through all this when I imported my Mercedes, pretty simple but I suggest you read everything throughly so as not to be hit with surprises. I would estimate you could save about $7,000 by the time all is said and done. Here is a link to the import gods. http://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx

If you're a CAnadian and just doing it to "lower" your cost, Hyundai canada won't honour the warranty. I'm Canadian and considered it myself. I would think the car would have to be registered stateside for a period of time before registering here.
Just something to be aware of

My understanding is that Hyundai USA honors the warranty, you get the work done at your dealer, pay for it, then Hyundai USA reimburses you.

I haven't confirmed that yet.

I have confirmed that they charge Canadians 6.1% duty just to cross the border!

Even if they do not who cares. First off you get 10 years and 100,000 miles in the states which basically doubles the Canadian warranty. If you live close to the border like me (45 min drive) I would simply drive down to get the work done down there. How often do you actually need the warranty work? In my case over the years it has been very rare but then again I swap cars out every 3 years. All your regular maintenance you need to pay for so that would be done in Canada.

Yep, 6.1% Duty and then Sales Tax on top of the total, plus all the other taxes. You may also have to have the car brought into compliance by an authorised service facility (usually the dealer) who will charge you for the DRL modifications, maybe a revised Instrument cluster and possibly other items. Check out the RIV information: http://www.riv.ca/Home.aspx

If you really still want to bring in a car from the USA, I would look for a good Car Broker to help with the purchase. They are specialists that do this for a living and know all the ins and outs. They can source the car of your choice (model, colour, interior) and then arrange for the vehicle to be imported into Canada taxes paid and delivered to your door. Obviously they charge a fee for this service, but it saves a lot of hassles and can still save you a bunch of money.
