  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Improvements to the 8 speed transmission?

I was wondering if the 8 speed from the previous generation Genesis is exactly the same as in the 2015 models or have they made any improvements to it to enhance performance and durability?

They must have tweaked it substantially because it is smooth as silk. Much, much better overall the my 2012 RSpec.

I don't know about he 2015, because I have not driven one. But the 8 speed in my 2014 is super smooth, buttery shifts and fast response when I punch it. The transmission hits all of the gears exactly the way I expect based upon the type of driving I am doing. Perhaps since the 2012 was the first year, they adjusted in 13/14 - Not sure if the 15 is same or adjusted yet again.

To my recollection the 8 speed transmission has never suffered from abrupt shifting or I just haven't seen too many complaints stating so. What it has been plagued with from the first was the inability to downshift quickly and to that end there has been many posts. With so many gears I guess the processing power wasn't up to the task. That is precisely one of the things on the list for the engineers to try to improve on the 2015 model according to a few articles that I've read. I understand a faster processor was used on the 2015 model to better cope with the complexity of downshifting an 8 speed transmission. I personally have never driven one of the earlier 8 speeds since my 2011 was a 6 speed but from many posts on this site from people who have and now drive a 2015 model I think their design goal improvements were achieved. I can speak for my car and say it responds beautifully even on downshifts.

My 2011 had the 6 speed, so I can't say - But the 2014 R-Spec I have drops the gears nearly immediately when I lay into the throttle. If I slam the gas to the floor at highway speeds, pressing beyond the kick down on the pedal, it will drop to passing gear and rip out immediately. I cannot see any issue with the transmission even in the 14MY cars.

My wife's V6 shifts close to perfectly. I am never waiting for a downshift or surprised by one when it happens. I think it's great. Never drove a first Gen so can't compare.

No complaints. And throttle response is solid and quick, not like some older POS European cars that supposedly were performance vehicles.

And gearing for 1st gear is awesome. I usually do not drive hard around town, and I am leaving the other cars a quarter block behind when the light turns green. Very pleased. My wife leaves those cars at least a half block behind becuase she just can't help it. Fun factor.

I don't have any issues with how smooth the shifts are on my 3.8 2012. If you're not getting on it substantially, you can't hardly even tell that it has shifted, except by watching the tach.

I thought my 2012 was buttery smooth also until I got my 2015. ;)

This is great news to me. My 2012 has a wonderful 8 speed transmission. Knowing that the 2015 is even better is truly motivating.

I see, in general, EVERYTHING in the 2015 is incrementally improved from G1.

Korea definitely follows the steps of Japan.

^^ agreed. I have both 2012 and now 2015. 2012 8 speed no complaints about it. Specific. They reflash did seem to help the delay issue, but I never complained about that since I run around in Eco mode all the time. It is adaptive trained to my 90% foot of leisure accelerating and smooth in traffic driving (but slightly above speed limits). The 2015 is in a class in itself. It also learns driving habits in each of the drive modes, from what I experience. In sport though it assumes a aggressive posture, period. Eco, and normal are seamless when going from smooth traffic driving to aggressive. Works very well. I like the slight firm down shifts when in town when coasting and slowing with 2012. Never need to ride the brakes, yet it knows somehow most the time where we I want to coast for a longer time, or coast and slow. 2015 seems to do same thing but smoother engagement.
