  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a V6 with the Premium Package (not the Tech). Yesterday, I noticed that the instrument lighting kept switching betweeen very bright and very dim regardless of whether the lights were set to "parking lights", "headlights", or "auto". This happened around dusk. I suspect that I have a lighting problem, but does anyone know if there is a "feature" that dims the instrument lights under certain outside lighting conditions? Again, this happened well after the lights were set to "on", not when the switch was first moved from "off" to "on". Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks!!

You are 100% correct! There is a sensor on the dash that automatically will turn on your headlights (if you have the knob on the lights stick set to Auto), and... will automatically dim your instrument lighting and the DIS screen.

And yes, sometimes around dusk, as you drive and the ambient light goes up and down a bit and the sensor is right on the threshold, it will switch back and forth. I don't even notice it any more. But I THINK you can defeat the instrument lighting from ever going dim with the 'wheel' dimmer on the instrument panel very near the steering wheel column. You should be able to tun it to the brightest setting and just a little further than that, it will make a small click. That should lock the lights into their brightest setting, which for my taste is too bright.

Many of us have photocell thingies on lights at our homes that automatically turn lights on at dusk and off at dawn. THEY work well because they are not moving through trees and past buildings that change the ambient light. The Genny sensor does have some 'hysteresis' built in, but electrically it's very tricky to cover all situations.

Thanks for the quick response! You saved me a visit to the dealer!

Considering my 7 year-old Pontiac Grand Am (no luxury car by any definition) has very efficient automatic light control I can't imagine it would be that much more difficult on the Genesis. I believe it's just a symptom of Hyundai's relative inexperience with such "fancy" (not really) systems.

Not a deal breaker but a definite annoyance on such a nice car.
