  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Was driving home today in a thunderstorm and halfway through a wipe the wipers stopped right in my view, then after some cursing and manuvering to try and pull into a parking lot through busy traffic they kicked back on and have repeatedly gone between working and not working... have read a few things on it and how it seems to be a common issue, any ideas on how to check if its the wiper motor or the stupid lil sensor in the washer fluid box? Have no error lights on the dash

Can you force them to swing back and forth by using the "wash" function?

No, they chose when they want to swing about 30% of the drive they will work the rest of the time they don't.
Its going to the hyundai dealership friday since i need it back roadworthy asap, borrowed a chevy cruze and omg the difference in feel and quality haha almost can't stand the cruze now... it feels so cheap and clunky

Update, switch for the wipers on the column has gone bad. They want $703 for part and install and it'll be a month before it comes in but they also "don't do loaners"

I have the same thing happen once in a while, usually when really cold (eastern Canada here). I took the motor assembly apart and what I noticed was corrosion between a plastic cover and the motor itself leading me to think water made its way into and was affecting the electronics in the motor assembly. The location of the motor leads to water hitting it which is why I think the motor is the issue in my case (but I'm not 100% sure).

Picture here is of the used replacement motor I got off Ebay. The area circled is where the corrosion is on that isn't working well.

I have not had the switch tested nor have I installed the replacement yet.

Good to know. Can it maybe be sealed with something?
I ended up ordering the switch off rockauto as I don't have time to wait a month, plus the part is more affordable on rockauto and I'll just replace the switch myself

I would think you could seal it somehow. Those metal clips come off (that's how I saw I had corrosion inside the electronics). Could silicone it and put the clips back on. Now that I think of it, I'll try it before putting it on ye car.

Now that i know moisture can get in there, I'm thinking i'll do the same honestly

Wanted to give an update on this topic. Installed the "new to me" wiper motor and have not had any hesitation or moments where wipers wouldn't work. I did end up putting clear caulking all around the edges of the motor/electronics assembly section but can't know if it will do anything.

Anyway, in my case, it seems the motor was the culprit as the new one works flawlessly.

I'll update if anything changes.

Nice, i replaced the switch in mine (pulling airbags is always sketchy haha) and I ran a bead of silicone around the edge of my wiper motor as you had suggested
