I have a 2015 3.8 Genesis with 40,000 miles. It runs perfectly with no misfires. For the last few months I have been getting a check engine light that comes and goes. Today when I had it in for brakes and oil change I asked the mechanic to check the codes. He said its a "cam code". I don't remember which one. He said when he drained the oil it looked low and he thinks the low oil level could be what's causing that code. I checked the oil last month, it looked like maybe .5 quart down.
Camshaft problems sound very expensive so I am worried. Any ideas what this could be?

It may be the cam position sensor. If so, you are looking at a couple hundred or so.

I had one go bad but it was a while back and I don't recall the cost. The car went into limp mode so I could drive it to the dealer.

See if they have an endoscope to look around at the internals of the engine. I'd also switch to full synthetic motor oil.

What did your mechanic suggest to why the code was present? Low oil level correct. The mechanic read the code; so the mechanic would know more than a person on the internet that has been given only vague information.

Low oil levels can affect oil pressure which in turn can negatively affect the timing system(including the camshafts) operation and even causes them to fail due to wear from improper lubrication. However, due to the engine low mileage I would assume that a proper oil change should solve the problem without any long-term effects. We need the exact engine trouble code to know what the problem really is.

Somebody just saying it's a "cam code" sounds shady AF... I'd go to Auto Zone or the like & get em to read it for you. Then you can look up the code on the internet & see what it actually is pertaining to.

I do agree with putting in synthetic oil though - most modern engines are set up for it anyway. The proper oil is essential for the proper function of the variable valve timing & etc. that rely on oil pressure to operate.

He thinks it was the oil level. When he did the oil change he said it looked low judging by eyeballing what came out. I checked the oil a few weeks ago and it was maybe half a quart down so I didn't bother to add oil.
I only use Mobil 1 and change the oil every 5000 miles. Engine idles very smooth so hard to believe there is a camshaft issue at only 40k miles

I would just buy a code reader and see what code pop up so that you will know exactly what is going on with your car. Too much guessing and asking complete strangers online to help trouble shoot without any real information for me personally. A cheap code reader cost about $20 and is good investment if you own a modern car.

Knowledge is best advice I can give you for this situation and buying a code reader will help you solve this mystery by giving you just that.

Yes I am going to do that. He cleared the codes and the check engine light hasn't returned as of now.

If you do have an oil burner, please switch to 3,750mi oil changes along with synthetic oil. Mobil 1 Advanced Synthetic is good. I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum every 3,750mi or every 6 months. I use them because they are in the Royal Dutch Shell family, whom owns Quaker State, Pennzoil and Shell. Walmart is the cheapest I've found and they deliver it to my front door for free. No roaming the aisles looking for it and the checkout line that takes 20 minutes

I hope it's not burning oil at 40000 miles! Like I said I used 1/2 quart at around 3000 miles. Alot of start and stops short trips. I will be paying more attention to the oil going forward

Shorter intervals will help with any blow by pollutants in the engine oil. Have you ever thought of sending a sample to Blackstone?

The check engine light came on again today, 300 miles after the last oil change. Oil level is fine. Tomorrow I will pull the codes and post them here.
Would a dirty air filter possible cause this? I need to replace mine, its been 15000 miles and a year since I last did.

Anything is possible...but I doubt it. Have you checked and cleaned the MAF?

If your car is showing the P0014 engine code, it may be due to your car's timing in the exhaust valve being over advanced. It's essential to get this code checked right away as it can cause further damage if ignored. While you can still drive around with P0014 registered issues, please don't do it. Driving with it will cause hard starting, erratic idling, stalling, poor engine performance, and increased fuel consumption. Again, if a lousy VVT control solenoid triggers the issue, it may cause other related components to fail.Dec 2, 2021

Interestingly enough, the engine runs perfectly smooth. No stalling or rough idle at all. The light comes on intermittently.

So I know the oil is supposed to be 5W30
I really don't know what the mechanic used other than Mobil1.
I am not starting to wonder if he used 10w40 standard weight oil and if he did would that throw the code?

If so, I'd be going back and asking for synthetic 5W-30.
