Is A PVC Catch Can Necessary?

I watched a video that said GDI engines need a PVC Catch Can to prevent gunk from building up on the valves, but some vehicles don't need them because they have injectors that are direct and regular injectors that keep the valves clean. I'm guessing by the soot on my tail pipe that my '16 Genesis just has the GDI and therefor would benefit from the PVC Catch Can. Is this true and if so, has anybody installed one? Would you care to share some pictures?

Here's my setup.

I used a Husky oil water separator that has what I thought was a glass bowl (it turned out it was plastic and discolored) so I could see what was in it. It had some rather bulky in/out ports that I removed some material with a belt sander. I mounted four little vibration isolators (may not have been necessary) to a plate that's hose clamped to the cross/support tube. Found some nice 90 deg. adapters and spring clamps online. The first hose I used was fuel rated but after two weeks the car reeked of gas. That fixed that problem. I think I had to make a hose size adapter to to fit the PVC valve outlet. Routing the hose was fun. Took a few attempts as it's really crowded in that area.

The thing works great. It grabs about half a cup of water/gas/oil every thousand miles or so. You can probably fit it closer to the motor but in this spot it's very easy to unscrew and empty. In this separator, there's a piss port on the bottom that leaked and it took some work to seal that. Might be easier to just buy a dedicated unit. I had to buy 25 feet of hose (when you need less than ten), so if you need some, I've got extra.
