  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is Genesis tracking you?

I must have a terrible driving score because my insurance went up drastically this year with no claims, no accidents, and no moving violations.
I've worked in the insurance industry for 21 years (Senior Underwriter). Almost everyone's rates have increased over the past 3+ years. Ours has and we have perfect driving records/credit. It has nothing to do with driving record (unless, of course, your driving record warrants it). It has everything to do with the cost of claims increasing exponentially. Simple bumper bumps/fender benders cost thousands to fix today. I was rear ended a few years ago. Cosmetic damage and new bumper cover, paint, and labor came to $3,700 USD. So, the real blame is inflation and capitalism, not anyone's driving record or if they're being tracked.

Hmmm, capitalism causing my car insurance to go up. That darn capitalism. Guess I need to move to China.
Yes, capitalism. Businesses are permitted to make a profit. When costs cut into profits, the norm is to raise prices and/or layoff employees.

Or, as a customer, I have the choice of shopping for lower rates. Which is why capitalism is good.

I think it is the complexity of modern cars. All the sensors, cameras, HUDs, etc. It used to be that if a car got hit, the part got repaired or replaced. Now that part may have all kinds of sensors, etc. built into it or added onto it.

Yes, but good luck with that. They're all raising rates. I've done the shopping around. All were about the same, really.

Blaming capitalism on rising insurance costs is your opinion but despite your experience with insurance, I disagree with you 100%. It sounds more like you are confusing capitalism and inflation. Capitalism can be driven by both inflation and deflation. The alternatives to capitalism are, communism, socialism, anarchism, and nationalism but I am getting in the weeds here. The Genesis Driving Score has but one purpose and that is to improve driving habits along with lower insurance rates, which Genesis (Hyundai) admits to providing and the NYT has reported on also. Of course, real-time driving habits were not monitored until the GPS. GPS, sensors, complexity of cars, and power train technology are additional reasons for car replacement/repair. But that being said I really do not agree that capitalism is the CAUSE of rising costs. Below is a reply from Genesis regarding my question on the driving score.
"Thank you for contacting Genesis Customer Care regarding your Genesis Driving Score. As you may know, thanks to the many sensors already built into your Genesis vehicle, combined with the Genesis Connected Services (GCS) system, you normally can view a weekly Genesis Driving Score.
We are currently updating the feature for improvements and the score is currently unavailable. We apologize for this inconvenience, and we will notify our GCS subscribers once it is restored."

Not a full answer but a typical corporate answer.

I'm not confusing anything. Re- read my post above, #41. I also mentioned inflation. Capitalism most certainly applies. When something cuts into profits, businesses will find a way to make up that loss. Like, raising rates.

I know this doesn't apply to data car sends but if you want you can block all tracking Genesis does when accessing their app.
They are not as bad with trackers as most apps as Verizon Media seems to be their only tracker. This and all app trackers are blocked by the DuckDuckGo app when "App Tracking Protection" is enabled in settings
Today alone it blocked 500 attempts by my bank, 300 from brokerage, 7000 from Washington Post app, 800 from my gym apps

I also received a letter today from LEXISNEXIS regarding a request for my driving score. Anyone can request this info from them. They advise they are revamping their system and it is not currently available. The driving score is part of their CONNECTED SERVICES APP that provides a litany of information or data that is beneficial to consumers but this DRIVING SCORE is a collection of driving style in real-time which is data that insurance companies have access to and is a major factor in determining rates. I learned there are a lot of nay-sayers out there about this but that is ok as people will eventually learn about this technology. I am not naive enough to believe this is THE ONLY data insurance companies use to determine rates but they go above and beyond the standard questions of 1. last date of accident 2. Age 3. Driving Violations 4. Driving Education Classes
Of course, you can opt out of this service but you will lose several other beneficial services also, many associated with mechanical services

*How is the Driving Score calculated? Generally, it accounts for how much and when a vehicle is driven, as well as how the vehicle is driven, including how often and when braking, acceleration, and speeding events occur.

Thanks for your input

I'm pretty convinced car complexity and features are the main reason of rising insurance costs.

On my previous car in winter, I used to clean only one camera, the one in the back. Now I got to go around the car and clean four of them. If someone comes close enough to take out one of my side mirrors, it's going to cost a camera too.

A windshield replacement is about 1000$ when it used to be 250-300$, but now they have to reconfigure all the cameras behind it to make sure they are properly aligned.

I used to have parking sensors in the back only, now there's four of them on the front bumper, plus a radar, plus a camera in the grille.

And the whole purpose of all those sensors was what already? Ah yes, to prevent crashes from happening in the first place which should have reduced our insurance premium... Cue in the slowclap.

As long as they don't track your social media posting like Tesla. We are good.

ABS and traction control engagement triggers events they provide to insurance companies as they have decided that reflects aggressive driving. Hope they don't track that during a Canadian winter, because that stuff is engaged most of the time...as it is designed to do.

What's interesting is Genesis is saying they they are no longer reporting the data (at least for now), but there is no mention about if it's still being collected !!

All modern cars collect data via (blackbox). GV70 is no exception.

The 'blackbox' is different from the Global Telematics box in that it only records the last 10 seconds +/- and has no capability to transmit the data.
The GT box is capable of transmitting an expanded array of data points real time & continuously, thus tracking you (location, speed, steering & braking inputs etc. etc.).
