  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello,

Current owner is 2015 Genesis 5.0. I am interested in buying first gen (2009 year model) 4.6L at 86k miles to replace my current SO's car. I may go test drive but at this mileage should I consider buying used? It is currently priced at 9k.

Any items to look for on high mileage G1 Genesis 4.6? Thank you for your input.

those v8s and the 6sp trans are pretty solid. the tau v8s in general is solid.

As far as I remember from the posts of one user (I think his ID was Mark88 and he had 2009 4.6) first year (2009) Tau v8 had some issues. Then Hyundai upgraded 4.6 v8 engine (adding more power and some other things) sometime in 2010.

Try to find 2011 4.6. It is rock solid and it is a monster when you have SprintBooster attached to accelerator pedal. And I just vent over 86,000 miles today after driving it for more than 7 years and no problems with the engine.

Recommend a newer used Sonata. Why buy a car with no warranty at all left?

The 2009 4.6 did have some valve springs that break. 2011 4.6 is rock solid in every way and when all services done including transmission fluid changes then the car is good well past 200,000 miles. We drove ours that we purchased new to over 220,000 miles.

My 2011 4.6 broke with only 25k miles on it. No replacement engine available. The car has been sitting for over 3 months on the dealer’s lot and still waiting. Combined with poor service experience from Hyundai, everything is just "perfect."

Try to get a full service history of the car you want to purchase. That will give you a better idea whether you should get it or not.

my 09 4.6 has 201k on the clock and it's still going strong, everything works as it should, no issues.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else: Don't own one of these cars out of warranty. Since that's not an option here, expect the following common issues with in an '09 v8, prices are dealer:
1. Limit switches for power tilt steering fail. $400ish
2. Limit switches for power seats fail. $400ish
3. HECU (ABS actuator) units fail. $2500-$3k
4. Head units fail. $3k-$4k
5. Rear cameras fail. $500-$1k
6. Valve springs break. $5k++ (typically totals the car if the engine is toast).
7. Transmissions can shift rough, requiring valve/solenoid replacement. $5k++ depending on whether the dealer is even willing or able to do the work, many won't.

If the HECU and head units were not already replaced, expect a $3k bill to replace either the head unit or the HECU (ABS module) within 12 months, then replace the other within 24 months, assuming a dealer does the work.

You can cut the above costs considerably by sourcing your own parts (ebay, junkyards, etc.) and finding a local non-dealer mechanic to do the work. See the ABS thread for an example ($3k became ~$300).
