  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is it legal?

I am being to lose it.... to many people parking in the fast lane...

Here is the question.

Would it be legal to have a message board in the back window of my car which scrolls...
" Keep right except to pass... It's the law."

And turn it on each time I have to pass someone on the right... so they know they are breaking the law?

Do I need a permit to display a sign like this?

I was thinking I could use a simple light display so it could be seen night or day.

Im pretty sure this would not work. Since thees people cant read anything anyway... why would YOUR sign make any difference to them.. Save your money :)

Reminds me of a bumper sticker: If I'm passing you on the right YOU are in the wrong lane!

Theres no law like that. Its just motoring courtesy.

The speed limit is 65mph (or 75 depending) regardless. If someones doing 65 in the fast lane, technically even though theyre being annoying, youre actually the one breaking the law by going faster than 65.

It is the law here in, Keep left except to pass...

Keep right except to pass. Even when DOING the speed limit "in the left lane" a trooper friend of mine has written tickets for "impeding the flow of traffic" (ie: hanging out in the left lane!!)

If I'm cruising at 80 in the left lane on 70 mph stretch, and you pass me on the right, you really have no place lecturing/flashing me on what the 'law' is.

As shown in the link posted by Wallymn, it is illegal to camp out in the passing lane on the interstates in Illinois. Unfortunately, however, many residents still think it's perfectly OK to get in the left most lane and put their cars and brains on cruise crontrol as they hover in the blind spot of vehicles to their right and prevent other cars behind them from breaking out of the pack.

Depending on the state you are in, you could be ticketed for this. Most states list the keep left law as a relation to the flow of traffic.. If traffic flow is 80-85, and you are parked at 80 in the left lane... in a 70 zone. you are breaking the law on 2 counts, 1 speeding, 2 not keeping left....

While I agree someone passing you is also breaking the law, that doesn't change the fact that you would be also breaking the the law.

The reason these laws are in place is to avoid accidents...

again, wondering if it is legal in the US.. I note that seller is not from the USA>

In Connecticut I once was behind a box truck with a BIG screen TV built into the back doors, I was watching TV while driving. Your question is clearly a state by state law question. Not a "legal in the US" question.

In that circumstance, presenting a lecture via a sign about legalities would certainly make the sign bearer a hypocrit. That wouldn't change the boorish and inconsiderate nature of the slower drivers actions, however.

Slow left-lane residency is as bad as slow play on the golf course - except that the resulting temper tantrums are considerably more dangerous at highway speeds. The basic problem seems to be that increasingly, people really don't give a crap who they inconvenience.

i support you 110% here Wally.

instead of buying a sign, just add some heavy duty nose protection to your genesis and start spinning people out.

Nice......

I just am trying to inform people... My thought behind this was after chatting around the "water cooler" at the office... that most people had NO idea it is illegal to park in the fast lane (left lane)...

I might be wrong but my assumption was people were ignorant of the law and if educated might start following this law... but seems most here feel people don't care about the law and will continue to act as fast moving sheep in the wrong lane...

A friend once suggested we should have guns that shoot darts bearing a sign saying "Jerk" that you can shoot at offending cars. If you get 3 "Jerk" darts, a towing service will jerk you off the road forever.

I'm pretty sure that all states have this on the books as law. Some have gone further and enabled "snail laws" like Colorado. Where I live most of the cars cruising in the left lane have Florida plates. When you ask them about their habit, they say the left lane is smoother than the right lane but they never go so far as to say why they don't move over when someone wants to pass. I cruise at whatever speed I feel is okay. I don't need someone jerk in the left lane acting like my conscious slowing me down. All you're doing is pissing people off and creating a dangerous situation.

I agree that hanging in the left-most lane is not good. However, there is that situation where one is cruising at 80 (SL+10) and the lane to the right is fairly crowded and only a bit slower, so one is passing but not very quickly. Then, suddenly a car going 90 or more appears and zooms past on the right and then almost pulls a two-wheeler to squeeze in ahead. Or, they crawl up your arse and there is no safe way to immediately get over and let them pass.

Speed is the big killer.

Another nasty situation is when there are 3 or more lanes to play with and the speeder uses the far-right lane to pass at a high-speed and then merges toward the left as you are trying to get over to allow others to use the passing lane.

Speed is the big killer.

In heavy traffic, it makes sense to use all available lanes and that is what folks do. This frustrates some speeders and they go into their maniacal weaving and tailgating mode.

Speed is the big killer.
