  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is it legal?

Speed is the big killer.

Sorry to disagree, but having spent 14 plus years in Germany driving a variety of cars (BMW, Mercedes, Mustang GT and etc...) and bikes (Kawasaki 750 and 6R plus a Harley) on the Autobahn, it's not speed that kills, its a combination of things. Too many varying speeds on the same stretch of road, drivers not knowing the lane rules, and unsafe speeds which is a very different thing than too much speed. On a clear dry day without summer vacation traffic, 130 + is not unreasonable with drivers who obey the laws, are competent (much better drivers on average over there due to their regulations on acquiring a license), and well designed and maintained vehicles.

Where the Germans tend to get in trouble is when they decide to go bumper to bumper in the fog at 130. That's the time we'd hit the back roads. It's not the speed itself, its the unwise application of that speed in less than ideal situations. The auslanders (thats us) get in trouble because we are not used to driving that fast, have no respect for the left only to pass law, and are determined to drive the cheapest hoopty that will pass the German's much more stringent inspections.

Many friends from Germany have told me our highways are perfect for much greater speeds than those posted (the ones maintained, anyway). After spending so much time over there I agree, but since we Americans are bound and determined to drive however and in whichever lane we want and to hell with anyone (everyone) else, I'll grudgingly drive the limit in order to avoid becoming a statistic and having the report state "unsafe speed" as cause of accident when in truth the cause is "stupid, unskilled, stubborn drivers of $#!++y cars".

My 2 cents.

I agree but I do have a habit of driving 5 to 8 mph over the posted limit and I try to do it in the right lane.

again, wondering if it is legal in the US.. I note that seller is not from the USA>

In Texas, you can be ticketed if you are in the left lane and obstructing traffic. There are signs on most highways that say "Keep right except to pass, or something like that and it is the law. I don't know of anyone who has received a ticket for it but probably happens.

I agree that hanging in the left-most lane is not good. However, there is that situation where one is cruising at 80 (SL+10) and the lane to the right is fairly crowded and only a bit slower, so one is passing but not very quickly. Then, suddenly a car going 90 or more appears and zooms past on the right and then almost pulls a two-wheeler to squeeze in ahead. Or, they crawl up your arse and there is no safe way to immediately get over and let them pass.

Speed is the big killer.

Another nasty situation is when there are 3 or more lanes to play with and the speeder uses the far-right lane to pass at a high-speed and then merges toward the left as you are trying to get over to allow others to use the passing lane.

Speed is the big killer.

In heavy traffic, it makes sense to use all available lanes and that is what folks do. This frustrates some speeders and they go into their maniacal weaving and tailgating mode.

Speed is the big killer.

In fact, there are NO studies suggesting that speed alone is a huge risk factor. I will agree whole heartedly that an 18 year old driving aggressively will presume the reflexes of those around him will match his, and so they need to be reined in. But fast speeds, on an open highway, with respect for the those around you, in the new modern car, is just not a killer.

Even at current speed limits, the use of common sense in bad elements is needed to survive any drive.

The number of accidents related to speed alone is remarkably low, and there is now increasing evidence that the number of accidents, percentage wise, increases as people age into the late 70's and up. And yet they are careful, slow drivers.

I will have my turn driving in my 80's, if I am lucky, and so I am not wanting the laws to change to fit the driving habits of 18 year olds. They will need to slow down some so that the cautious, slow reflexed, 80 year old can see them and respond accordingly. But when I see any person, any age, driving below the flow of traffic speed in the left lane, I think that that merits a ticket much more than the speeder, alert and courteous to others, that is driving well within the capacity of his vehicle and driving skills.

Indeed, the left lane slow driver should get the equivalent of the "super speeder" tickets now being given in Georgia (for people driving 15 mph or more over the speed limit).

I think more people's rights are violated by the slow driver in the left lane than by most speeders. AND THE ANGER, and the associated risks taken by otherwise good people in response to the left lane bandit may lead to even more accidents.

Speeding tickets are now primarily a source of revenue. Speed limits could easily be 80 mph, and that is what most people drive in the flow of traffic. I don't want an 80 mph speed limit, because then some people would drive 90 mph, and I do think that that speed is beyond the capacity of too many people to drive safely. Even 2/3 of people could handle that speed, but this speed limit would REQUIRE too much courtesy from the slower drivers, and they are an entitled bunch who don't want to be reminded of their lesser skills, and do not wish to have to adjust their driving to the masses. I am hoping that at 80 I will drive with awareness of the rights of others, and believe that this compromise is EASILY done.

Got to love those old white haired ladies driving their $250,000 motor homes with a Jeep connected to the back , heading north out of Florida into Georgia cruising at 85 mph. I cringe and get out of their way.

Theres no law like that. Its just motoring courtesy.
It is against the law in Texas to drive in the left lane on RURAL multi-lane highways except when passing. Does not apply in cities. Not well enforced, either.

Wish I could cure my wife of riding the left lane. She has moved to the left lane as much as 11 miles before a left turn. I ask her whether she is in England when she does that.

Of course it is. You could hit a turtle crossing the road or a chunk of tire tread and you could lose control. Race car drivers are often the safest on public roads as they are keenly aware of the consequences of high speeds.

Even at current speed limits, the use of common sense in bad elements is needed to survive any drive.

You are playing with statistics. Check any auto insurer and you will find the opposite. They (the insurers) shy away from speeders and young farts with muscle cars. They employ mathematicians who know how to analyze data.

Hanging in the left lane and speeding should both be ticketed. Driving at +30 speeds should invoke mandatory suspensions and BIG fines.

Indeed, the left lane slow driver should get the equivalent of the "super speeder" tickets now being given in Georgia (for people driving 15 mph or more over the speed limit).

No, super speeders kill and that is what the law is trying to avoid.

I think more people's rights are violated by the slow driver in the left lane than by most speeders. AND THE ANGER, and the associated risks taken by otherwise good people in response to the left lane bandit may lead to even more accidents.

Anger gives no one the right to drive like a maniac. Sorry!

No way that very many cars and drivers are safe at 80 mph. You and I differ deeply on this issue.

I am being to lose it.... to many people parking in the fast lane...

Here is the question.

Would it be legal to have a message board in the back window of my car which scrolls...
" Keep right except to pass... It's the law."

And turn it on each time I have to pass someone on the right... so they know they are breaking the law?

Do I need a permit to display a sign like this?

I was thinking I could use a simple light display so it could be seen night or day.

I don't beleive its the law in every state being from Oklahoma it states slower traffic right lane. which means faster traffic in the left lane. There is no signs for passing lanes

Wally, not sure if you live in the Twin Cities, but we have a lot of left lane exits in Mpls/St. Paul. Sometimes I am in the left lane because I have to exit left in less than 1/2 mile. I'm doing 65 (Speed Limit is 55) and more often than not I have a guy on my rear bumper pissed as hell because I am in his way. I always pull over to the right lane, if I'm not exiting on the left. But in this situation, I cannot.

Most of the folks that I hear complaining about left lane parkers say that a guy was in the left lane doing 45. --- Anyone in the twin Cities doing 45 in the right lane would not be tolerated, much less the left. Most of the 'left Lane Parkers' that I see are in reality, speeding at least 10 miles over the limit.

So, just make sure that the cars you are following are not taking the next left exit. There is enough road rage out there already.

I am in the MSP area.. and i am aware of the left lane exits.... but if we are more than 2 miles from such an exit... why are you in the left lane?
Speed (outside of dead stop rush hour) runs about 70 in the 55 zone..(If I am doing 70 I am pacing traffic...)... So at 65 in the fast lane (again more than 2 miles from the exit) you are creating a bottleneck... If people are passing on your right... move right...

Since we are speaking about left lane exits...... We have many 2 lane left exits (or road splits)...... here again I see a lot of people move to the extreme left lane. and watch as people pass on the right ....

It shouldn't be easier to pass on the right than on the left... but I find I pass on the right about 2 to 1, compared to passing on the left...

I prefer the left lane on 2 laners or center lane. The left is far smoother and if on a 2 lane road, you will find me there. If a car is coming up, I move over. I usually drive 8-12 mph above posted. I take "Passing Lane" as a suggestion.
See this video on passing and speed techniques! lol

Yes- all lanes are always occupied!

I never said 2 miles - I said 1/2 Mile --- read my post again!
