  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just picked my car up from the mechanic. They replaced my high pressure fuel pump and did an oil change. When driving the car back home on the freeway at about 65mph, I pressed the throttle all the way down, and the engine just revved while the car did not accelerate. Basically at wide open throttle, the transmission did not kick into gear to accelerate me. This was never a problem before I picked it up today. Is my transmission ruined? Is there any further way I can test my transmission to troubleshoot?

That doesn't sound good. Are you sure they didn't dump the new oil in the transmission?

I'm writing this on a cell phone, no idea what year model, engine or miles your have on your car - can't see that info if it's posted. But it does sound odd this happened after going to have work done.

I have a 2013 R Spec with 90k miles. The transmission was fine when I dropped it off. I’m not sure if they pumped oil into the tranny because there is no dipstick. I’m taking it to the dealership on Saturday to try and get a diagnosis.

UPDATE: dealer said my transmission has completely failed and will need a replacement under warranty. I’ve had the car for 3 months and it’s already been at the mechanic for almost 1 month total.

Well the good thing is that your car has the warranty it has, and before long you'll have a new transmission.

Keep us updated on how it goes!

Just curious. You have a ‘13 with 90,000 mi on the odo and you are not the first owner of the vehicle. What warranty do you have that will cover replacing your transmission?

Most dealer extended warranties cover transmissions, and you can get non dealer warranties, thougheven more expensive to cover over 120,000+ miles.

I was a second owner of a 2012 R-Spec, and my transmission went at 50K miles. Dealership in Doylestown, PA replaced it under warranty. I think back then they covered the 100k miles under second, third owners.
Not noe tho.

Think Hyundai only covers up to 60k miles on any owner other than original owner. Got to watch that when you are planning to buy one. Same for Kia. However dealers will negotiate with you for 12 month additional mechanical warranty if you stand your ground. Otherwise need to buy extended warranty
if you want 100k coverage.

Hyundai only covers first owners with 100k mechanical warranty, second owners get only coverage up to 60K miles mechanical warranty. Must watch that when you consider buying that or KIA. Normally a dealer will offer you a free one year 12K mechanical warranty with purchase if you stand your ground if car has over 60K, otherwise you have to pay for any additional mechanical warranty to 100K or get a non dealer warranty.

UPDATE 2: The dealer called me back and thought I was the previous owner when they said I was still under warranty. I’ll be paying $4300 for a new transmission with a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty. This car has been such a headache so far. I’ll probably sell it in a few months once I get a chance to pay down the loan a bit.

No, “back then” only the original owner was eligible for powertrain warranty coverage up to 10 years/100,000 miles. As the second owner you still received coverage under the 5/60,000 basic warranty BUT your coverage ended there.

I would be asking serious questions about why the transmission died so suddenly right after it was serviced.
If they replaced the transmission they should know what caused the failure and whether it was fluke or something was not done correctly during the service. Unless they did both the service and the replacement then you may be out of luck getting an answer.

An independent mechanic serviced the car. This is the first time I have taken it to the dealer. To my knowledge the transmission has never been replaced.

I have a 2012 3.8L with 92K. There are other forums talking about our tranny. Mine was shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th when it wanted. It would do it for a day or so then go away for weeks never throwing a code or light on dash. I swapped out solenoids in the tranny with a flush and new pan/filter. I just got it back this week so too early to tell but need to put mileage on to see if it’s fixed.

UPDATE 3:
I got the car back today $4500 later with a new transmission. The problem is still there. Needless to say I am very upset and spent money I don’t have and the problem is still there. The car shifts much more smoothly but still won’t kick down or shift at higher throttle. The car is faster at half throttle than full throttle. The dealer says they will try to fix the computer and see what the issue is. Now I’m thinking I could have just kept the rough shifting transmission and saved the $4500 if the problem wasn’t fixed with a new tranny..

Did you purchase the car from a dealer/garage or private sale. If it was from a dealer/garage and you have only owned it for 3 months I would be having a conversation with the seller.
