  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is the 2.0T AWD G70 still fast enough to be fun?

I'll be coming from a 2012 Audi S4 with a SC/V6. The 333 HP power is fun, but I don't get many chances to go full throttle due to traffic. It's really overkill. I'm thinking the AWD 2.0 top trim G70 would give me better gas mileage. But, will I be disappointed from what I'm used to?
You can always add a JB4...

Useful! If Alex is accurate, the G70 7.4 seconds vs the A5 sportback 5.7 second time is huge. Audi manages to get better fuel economy too.

I’m not aware of a R/T, C&D, Auto Week or other formal test of 2.0T, probably because of limited test car availablity, but if someone knows of one, I’d like to see it too.

^ nothing formal or instrumented from the major auto mags on the 2.0T yet. I too am waiting patiently.

I cannot believe any reports of 7+ seconds 0-60. Once the mags get to it we’ll see very low 6’s or high 5’s. wether or not the average driver can achieve that is another matter, but we need to compare apples to apples.

Better yet would be a multi vehicle comparison against competitors where all vehicles are tested under the same conditions.

Will the 2.0 have launch control? That looks fun. I'm coming from a 3.8 Genesis Coupe which has 348 hp, and I love the looks of of the G70. I'm just not sure if the increase in monthly payments for the 3.3 will be worth it.

Over 7 sec is a ridiculous estimate. The Kia Stinger has the same 2.0T and it did it in 6.6 sec (MotorTrend confirmed). The Stinger is over 200 lbs heavier than the G70. The estimates can be had by a power-to-weight ratio. This equates to roughly 14hp/lb. Another thing to consider is how efficient the drivetrain is. It'll be low 6's. High 5's would be perfect for this car.

But, the Honda Accord 2.0T would still be quicker thanks to its weight... muahahahahahaha!

I'm not buying 7.4 either. It's like the 2.0T Optima, where you can find 0-60 times ranging from 5.7 to well over 7 sec. It depends so much on the driver and the conditions (temp, humidity, altitude, track surface, etc.).

But I'll add this for those who have no turbo experience - what is important to most of us is mid-range, which is where most real-world driving takes place. And the mid-range on the 2.0T feels like that of a bigger (naturally-aspirated) engine. Which means that getting on freeways, squirting away from stoplights, and general acceleration around town and on the freeway will make it feel quicker than 0-60 times indicate.

I had the 2.0T in my Sonata. I agree with what you said and it can be verified by asking the Camero driver I passed. You should have seen the look on his face.

Yes, but the Sonata is a much lighter vehicle than the G70. And earlier 2.0 turbos were more HP than the G70 2.0s. (274hp)

They reduced the hp so they could increase the torque. Seems to be an inverse relationship between the two at a given displacement and turbo capacity, so to get more torque and lower the rpm at which it maxed out, they had to lose a few hp. But it feels stronger than the earlier 2.0's because of those torque changes.

If you've ever driven an Audi 2.0T - with its paltry 211hp - you know it feels just as strong as the Kia/Hyundai 2.0 with 245hp, because the torque output is the same with both engines.

^ Yep.

In addition to getting a 6.1s time w/ the Stinger 2.0T, C/D got a 6.7s time w/ the Sportage SX (FWD) 2.0T (240 HP).

Something was off on Alex's test (and don't think it was his real test on his typical, local conditions).

There are a good # of reviewers who think the 2.0T w/ or w/o the MT is, in a way, more fun than the 3.3T due to being less nose heavy.

Once the G70 (and Stinger) get the new 2.5T, should be best of both worlds.

Why don't you get the A4? It will be faster than the G70 2.0T.

There's always the option of getting the 2.0T and dropping the JB4 in there to amp it up. Not sure how much HP and torque it would add, but I'm guessing it could get it close to 300 in each.

after a few weeks with the 2.0T, albeit RWD and 6MT, i can confirm that yes - the 2.0T is quick enough to be fun. i wouldn't call it all-out fast, but there is plenty of power to be very quick around town and on the highway. very decent mid-range and surprising pull even up higher in the RPM range. the changes Hyundai made to the 2.0T to reduce peak hp but provide a broader powerband are evident. a relative's '13 Gen coupe with 275hp from the 2.0T has much more lag.

would it be nice to have a bit more power? of course. i still think ~280-300hp and ~310lb-ft would be ideal for this car. especially for the RWD and 6MT. many other 2.0T's are in the 280hp+ range so it seems like Hyundai has been too mild with tune or otherwise. especially in the Genesis where we use premium fuel. a 0-60 time in the mid 5s range would fit the platform well and leave a large enough gap to the 3.3T to not steer too many folks away from that.

pairing the 3.3T with RWD and 6MT would be a killer combo, but that's not going to happen. that said, i am enjoying the lighter weight of the G70 2.0T RWD compared to the 3.3T AWD Sports i drove. much better balance and turn-in. so a win for handling and dynamics, to contrast against the inarguable loss in power.

i'm new to turbo vehicles, but i've always heard how much untapped potential there is from the factory and how tune-able they are. i may eventually look into chips or tunes or downpipes, etc, but for now i am enjoying the novel-to-me rush that the turbo provides.
